Chap. 2:
Junhyung wanted nothing more than to have the floor open up and swallow him. He would withstand anything as long as he didn’t have to face five angry friends.
“Why did Yoseob say you were cutting yourself again?” Kikwang demanded. His eyes darted over the droplets of blood and the bloodstained cloth.
“Well…” Junhyung murmured.
“And why are you cutting yourself in the first place?!” Doojoon asked, his arms folded across his chest.
“The last time he was cutting himself, it was because his parents were getting along,” Yoseob informed them. He looked at Junhyung, his expression sad. “Are they fighting again, Junhyung? Is that why you’re cutting again?”
“Wait a minute! Pause and rewind,” Hyunseung stated, looking at the blond. “You knew he was doing this before?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you tell us about it?! Are you stupid or something?!”
“Calm down, Hyunseung.” Doojoon focused on Junhyung again. “Spill it, Jun. What’s going on?”
Junhyung looked away, deciding to stare at the rain lightly pelting the window pane. “Don’t worry, guys. My parents aren’t fighting or anything anymore.”
“Then what is bothering you so much that you’d cut yourself?” Dongwoon questioned.
Junhyung shrugged. “I guess it’s become more of a habit than anything.”
“Well, break that habit or we’ll tell President hyung about this.”
Junhyung looked at them worriedly before nodding his head. “I won’t do it again.”
Doojoon, Kikwang, Dongwoon, and Hyunseung left the room. Yoseob stood by the door, staring at Junhyung with his eyes watery.
“Junhyung, what are you trying to hide from us?”
The elder shook his head. “Nothing, Seob. Let’s go before we miss the beginning of the movie.” He pulled the blond with him to the living room where he sat on the floor. Yoseob sat behind him on the couch, curling his legs beneath him.
Before the movie was over, the members of Beast were already asleep. Kikwang and Hyunseung were sprawled out together in front of the coffee table; Doojoon and Dongwoon were nestled in the recliner together; while Yoseob was stretched out on the couch and Junhyung leaned against it. His head was only an inch from the blond’s.
Junhyung woke up about an hour later, his stomach churning. He got up and hurried to the bathroom, accidentally kicking Kikwang in the shin. He barely heard the younger man yelp as he slammed the bathroom door and leaned over the porcelain toilet. Kikwang knocked on the door, mumbling something about needing to relieve himself.
“Hyung?” Kikwang asked, opening the door so he could peek in. he was startled to see Junhyung curled into a ball on the bathroom floor, his forehead pressed to the cold base of the toilet. “Hyung, are you feeling okay?” It was a stupid question to ask since Junhyung was hunched over the toilet again before Kikwang finished his sentence.
Junhyung waved at Kikwang, trying to shoo him away as more bile spewed from his body. “Go back to bed,” he said once he was able to talk. “I don’t think I’ll be done any-” He was cut off as he leaned over the toilet for the third time.
Kikwang rushed from the bathroom and into the living room. He turned on the lights, making the others wake up. “Guys, Junhyung is really sick!”
Although he was groggy from just waking up, Doojoon hurried to the bathroom. Sure enough, Junhyung was leaning over the toilet. “Junhyung?”
The younger waved him off. “Go back to sleep, Doojoon.”
“Someone should stay up with you.”
“Why are you so pale?” Dongwoon asked worriedly. He stood just behind Doojoon. Kikwang, Hyunseung, and Yoseob were behind him. “Do you want something to drink?”
Junhyung shook his head. “I wouldn’t be able to keep it down.”
“Not even water?” Yoseob squeaked. Junhyung shook his head. “Maybe we should take you to the hospital…”
“I’ll be fine. It’s probably just the stomach flu or something. Go back to sleep, guys.” He looked over at them and smiled a little. “I’m feeling better.”
Hyunseung crossed his arms, giving Junhyung a skeptical look. “If you aren’t better by morning, we’re taking you to the hospital.” He grabbed Kikwang’s hand and dragged him off so they could sleep. Dongwoon yawned and left with Doojoon. Yoseob stood silently in the doorway.
“Are you really alright, hyung?”
He nodded. “I feel a lot better knowing that there’s nothing left in my stomach to come back up.” Seeing the look on Yoseob’s face, he smiled. “Sorry, Seob. I should try to be less straightforward.”
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, I’m sure, Seob. You can go back to sleep.” The blond left, closing the door behind him. Junhyung sighed after hearing his friend’s footsteps fade and a bedroom door close. He leaned his head back against the cabinet and stared at the wall for a few minutes. “Tomorrow’s going to be hell…”
The sun rose, awakening the members of Beast. Dongwoon rubbed his eyes, walking into the bathroom. He noticed that the light was still on and glanced around, seeing Junhyung asleep on the floor. Knowing he wouldn’t be able to lift the older boy, he stomped from the room.
“Kikwang! Get Yoseob’s boyfriend off of the bathroom floor! I need to pee!” Dongwoon grumbled.
“What?” Yoseob asked, peeking around the corner from the kitchen.
“I told Kikwang to get Junhyung out of the bathroom. He slept on the floor.”
“I’ll wake him up,” Kikwang said. He walked to the bathroom, fully intending to see a sleeping Junhyung. He sighed when he noticed that the third eldest was awake and leaning over the toilet again. “Yah, how many times have you thrown up?”
“I lost count,” Junhyung mumbled. He leaned back, gulping in fresh air. “I’ve got somewhere I need to be, so I’ll just leave.”
He stood and hurried from the bathroom and into his and Doojoon’s room. The eldest of Beast was reclining peacefully against the headboard as Junhyung entered. He didn’t say a thing as the younger pulled clean clothes from his closet and went to working changing.
“Slow down, Junhyung. You’ll make yourself vomit again,” Doojoon cautioned him.
“I have somewhere to go, hyung. I might not be back before lunch, so just eat without me.” He tugged the dirty shirt off and tossed it to the floor. Pulling on the clean shirt, he waved absentmindedly to Doojoon before leaving the room. He grabbed a bus pass from the counter and headed for the door.
“Where are you hurrying off to?” Hyunseung asked, stepping in front of him.
He stopped abruptly, trying not to run into the elder. “I have somewhere I need to be in about thirty minutes.” Junhyung ducked around Hyunseung. “I might not be home for lunch, so eat without me.” He closed the door behind him as he left.
Worriedly, the blond slipped out of the house after him, undetected. He followed Junhyung to a bus stop and they waited for six minutes before a bus showed up. Junhyung boarded the bus, unaware he was being followed. Once the bus stopped in front of a small clinic, Yoseob knew something was wrong. He followed the elder off of the bus and silently snuck in behind him into the building.
“Oh, right on time, Mr. Yong,” the receptionist said, smiling at him. Yoseob had ducked behind a plant at the last moment, hoping she hadn’t seen him. “If you take a seat, the doctor will be out in a moment “
“Thanks.” Junhyung sat down, stretching his legs out in front of him. Only a few minutes passed before the doctor came out.
“Ah, Yong Junhyung!” the doctor greeted him. “I wish it was on better terms that we met up.”
“So do I, Dr. Wong.”
“If you’ll follow me, we’ll get your treatment started.”
Yoseob was frozen, mouth agape as he heard Junhyung and Wong’s footsteps fade away. He wasn’t sure he heard right, but Junhyung following Dr. Wong for some sort of treatment certainly confirmed he had. He slowly crept outside to wait for his friend. He stood, paced, and did pushups while he waited. When he looked at his watch, it said the time was 1:22 pm. He jumped when the door opened, the bell on it jingling.
“Yoseob?” Junhyung asked, closing the door behind him. He looked almost as pale as he had last night and he looked sicker.
“What was the treatment for?” Yoseob demanded.
“What?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m asking about! What the hell do you need treatments for?!”
The elder pinched the bridge of his nose before looking at the blond. He grabbed Yoseob’s hand. “Let’s go somewhere and talk, Seob.”
Without letting the other reply, Junhyung led they away from the clinic, down several streets, stopping at a secluded place in a park. He made Yoseob sit before taking the vacant spot beside him.
“Why do you need treatments, Junhyung?”
“Before I tell you, there’s something I want to know.” He looked at the blond. “What are your feelings toward me?”
After a moment, Yoseob spoke. “I think you’re amazing, hyung. You’re charismatic, charming, humorous. You have a phenomenal complexion and you’re voice is captivating. I really admire you, hyung.”
Junhyung sighed. “That’s not what I meant.”
The younger stared at him, confused. “What did you mean?”
The elder grabbed the blond by his face and crashed their lips together. Yoseob’s eyes widened in shock at Junhyung’s uncharacteristic behavior. When they parted, Junhyung spoke. “I like you, Yoseob. I like you a lot.”
Yoseob smiled, covering Junhyung’s hands with his own to keep them on his face. “I like you a lot, too.”
“Before I tell you, you have to promise me that those feelings won’t change.”
Still smiling, Yoseob nodded as much as he could. “I promise, Junhyung.”
He took a deep breath, bracing himself for Yoseob’s reaction “Seobbie, the reason I’ve getting receiving treatments as an outpatient, is because I have cancer.”
The blond stared at him, eyes wide and mouth agape. The word cancer stood out above everything else. When his brain finished processing Junhyung’s words, Yoseob felt tears slide down his cheeks.
“Cancer…?”
