Summary: Lakeside was perfect until the past crept up on them.
Chapter Seven:
Mir and Joon stared at the man on the balcony. They were rooted where they stood, too startled to make a move forward or backward. The only sound was their breathing and some footsteps. They hadn’t realized the footsteps were behind them until they were both captured. Minhwan was able to restrain Mir while Seunghyun had restrained Joon. Hongki laughed, climbing down from the balcony.
“You’re cute!” he said, grabbing Mir by his chin. “Want to kiss?”
“No, I have a boyfriend,” Mir objected immediately.
“It’s allowed to be a secret!”
“Hey, are you the guys who jumped that kid?” Joon asked, looking up to Jonghun. “He has shoulder length hair. It’s reddish brown…”
“That kid?” Jonghun though for a moment. “He was already beat up when we got there. He saw us and thought we’re the ones who jumped him, but we aren’t.”
“We chased the guys who jumped him,” Jaejin explained, walking out the front door of the cottage.
“So, why are you holding us captive?”
“How do we know that you aren’t the guys who jumped him?”
Sighing, Joon looked toward the ground. “We wouldn’t do that. We’ve all been through hell and back. There’s no way we’d hurt them!”
“Joon, calm down,” Mir said, trying to soothe his friend. “They don’t know what happened a year ago, so cut them some slack.” He looked to Jonghun. “Please, if you aren’t the ones who hurt him, help us find the ones who did.”
“All we know is that there was more than just five,” Minhwan offered. He released his hold on Mir and went to stand by Jaejin. “We’ve been looking all over for them.”
Seunghyun released Joon and followed Hongki to where the others stood. “We’ve been using this as headquarters for the time being. We think they might have been from the military base just west of here.”
Mir looked at Joon, terrified. “Joon, we don’t have to go back there, do we?”
“What do you mean back there?” Jonghun stood by his friends. “You’ve been to the base before?”
Joon nodded. “We were recruits last year.” He glared at the ground, the memories flooding his brain. “We left because we had to. Our friends were in trouble, so we helped them escape and left with them. We haven’t been there since.”
“You went AWOL?” Hongki gasped. “How have they not caught you by now?”
“Because they were sneaky,” someone interrupted. He smirked as he walked out of the shadows of the trees. He had a gun pointed at them. “It’s been a while, boys.”
“C-Commander Yoon?!”
The early morning in Lakeside was quiet. Too quiet for his liking. Doojoon looked around the bedroom, sensing Junhyung still asleep beside him. He smiled at the shear innocence the younger man displayed while asleep. No matter how happy he felt, he couldn’t stop thinking that something was wrong. That something was going to happen.
“Junnie, it’s time to wake up,” he whispered. He shook the other slightly.
“Five more minutes, Yoonie. I’m sleepy,” Junhyung replied, grabbing Doojoon’s hand to stop him. He pulled the elder closer and used him as his pillow.
“Junnie, we have to get up.” When his phone buzzed on the table, Doojoon reached for it, ignoring the voice screaming frantically in his head. “Hello?” He felt his heart stop upon hearing the voice on the other end.
“Doojoon, what’s wrong?” Junhyung sat up, pulling his husband up with him. “Breathe, Doojoon.” He pried the phone from Doojoon, placing it to his ear. “Hello?”
“Hello, Yong. It’s been a long time since we’ve spoken, hasn’t it?” Commander Yoon’s voice carried through his brain, but it didn’t want to register.
“Commander Yoon? No way. He’s dead. Who the hell are you, and why are you parading yourself around as Commander Yoon?” Junhyung tensed when her heard people yelling on the other side of the line. “Mir? Joon?”
“Your friends’ lives are in your hands. I’ll send someone to get you. We have unfinished business.” The line went dead.
“Junnie…” Doojoon forced the younger to look at him, tears filling his eyes. “Why is he still alive? Hyunseung shot him a year ago…he killed him.”
“Doojoon, listen to me.” He kissed Doojoon quickly before he got off of the bed. “Take care of Jinkyong and Yongsook. I’ll be back before you know it.”
He turned, halting at the sight of their kids in the doorway.
“Umma, why is appa crying?” Jinkyong asked. She was holding onto Yongsook’s hand. “Did you fight?”
Junhyung smiled, walking over and kneeling before the two kids. He hugged them tightly, tears falling from his eyes. “No, we didn’t fight. I just have to go away somewhere and appa doesn’t want me to go.” He took a deep breath. “You know I love the two of you, right?”
“Yes, umma. We know. Where are you going?”
“I have some errands to run. I’ll be back later. Look after appa, okay?” He darted out of the room, down the stairs, and out of the house before his kids could see that he was crying. He was startled by Heechul, Hankyung, and Leeteuk standing outside. They were on the porch at Leeteuk’s, but they looked over as soon as he slammed the front door.
“Yah, what’s wrong, Junhyung?” Heechul asked, hurrying over to him. They got even more worried when Junhyung collapsed, sobs wracking his body.
“Hey, what’s wrong? Is Doojoon hurt or mad or something?” Leeteuk asked. He kneeled beside the younger and pulled him into a hug.
“He’s alive…” Junhyung choked out. “Commander Yoon…he’s alive. And he’s coming for me…”
Leeteuk tensed, his anger immediately sparking. “I won’t let him touch you.”
Junhyung shook his head. “He has Mir and Joon.” He took a few breaths, trying to calm himself down. “I have to go or he’ll come here for me. I don’t want him near Doojoon or the kids.”
“We’ll help you,” Hankyung offered. “I’ll stay here with Heechul and look after them. Go to the jailhouse and get Kangin. He’ll help.”
“Sure he’ll help,” Heechul muttered. “Hell help kill them off! Or have you forgotten he tried that recently?!”
“Let’s go, Junhyung. I’ll drive, if you don’t mind.” Leeteuk helped Junhyung get to the car. After they were buckled, he sped to the police station.
Hankyung and Heechul rushed into the house, thundering up the stairs. They found Doojoon staring out of the window. He had witnessed Junhyung collapse just moments ago. Fresh tears running down his cheeks. Heechul approached him and hugged him.
“Are you okay, Doojoon?” he mumbled, staring out the window.
“My dad wants Junhyung dead…and Junhyung is going to meet him to finish everything.” Doojoon looked at Heechul through watery eyes. “I don’t want to lose him. He’s the only one I’ve loved.”
“Leeteuk is getting Kangin and the two of them are going with Junhyung,” Hankyung informed him. “I know for a face that Teuk won’t let anything happen to Junhyung.”
Leeteuk parked at the station and left the car running as he hurried inside. Seungho was there with G.O, the two of them going over some paperwork. They looked up when he entered.
“I need Kangin,” Leeteuk said.
“You know we can’t let him out,” Seungho replied, his forehead creasing as he frowned.
“He needs to come with me.”
“We can’t let him-”
“Now, dammit!” He glared at Kangin through the bars of the cell. “I hope your happy with your stupid shitty commander!”
“Whoa, Leeteuk, calm down. What’s going on?”
He looked at Seungho. “That jackass is still alive and he’s coming after Junhyung. I need that stupid bastard in the cell to come with me. We’re the only two who are capable of taking Yoon down.”
“He’s alive?!” Kangin gasped. “But he died last year! Teuk, what the hell, man. Are you on drugs?”
“He’s telling the truth,” Junhyung interrupted. He was standing in the doorway, staring at the floor. “I talked to Yoon myself. He said he’s sending someone for me.”
“You can’t go!” Kangin was starting to panic, although he wasn’t sure why. “He’ll kill you! He hates gays!”
“I know. He tried to kill me last year, but Doojoon and the others came to my rescue.” Junhyung smirked. “Now, it’s my turn to rescue them.”
“He has someone hostage? Who?” G.O asked.
“Mir and Joon. And five other guys that were with them. But I need to do something.”
Seungho closed his eyes, fishing his phone from his pocket. When he opened them, they were as stony as they had been last year. “Park, get your butt over here. We have a mission.” He hung up wit him before dialing another number. “Sergeant, rally your men. We’re going on a rescue mission.” As T.O.P spoke on the other line, he listened intently. “We’re going after Commander Yoon. Call Sergeant Yoon, we need his help. Have Sungmin and Kyuhyun look after the kids.”
“We’re fighting?” G.O asked, a smile spreading across his face.
“Get our uniforms, Jung.” He looked at Leeteuk. “Would you and your friends like to join us?”
“Hankyung and Heechul are keeping an eye on the Yoon-Yong residence,” he informed. He looked at Kangin. “Would you be willing to help?” He laughed. “Can we even trust you?”
“You can trust me, Teuk. I’m still the same Kim Young-Woon you met over seven years ago. That hasn’t changed.”
Leeteuk smiled sadly at him. “Something did change, Kangin. And it’s never going to be the same. Seungho, bring him with us.”
He grabbed Junhyung by the elbow and started to leave the station. He stopped when he saw an armored tank pull up. Instinctively, he pushed the younger behind himself in case things got ugly.
“Someone need a hand?” T.O.P laughed, opening the heavy door and climbing out. He was fully clothed in camouflage and a rifle was slung across his shoulder. “We’re all in position, Sergeant Yang! My men are waiting by the west exit. Taeyang has a walkie-talkie to keep in touch with Sergeant Yoon.”
Seungho walked out with G.O behind him. G.O was dragging Kangin behind him, cuffs locking his wrists. “Nice timing, Sergeant Choi.” He grinned. “Let’s go get our friends.”
Junhyung cracked a smile. He walked down in front of Seungho and T.O.P. When he was facing the both of them, he saluted them. “Sergeant Yang, Sergeant Choi. I’m ready for duty.”
“At ease, soldier.” T.O.P couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s go get your husband and head out.” They all climbed into the tank, finding that it was surprisingly roomy for a being a bug hunk of metal.
They arrived at the Yoon-Yong residence, seeing Kyuhyun and Sungmin’s car parked our front. Junhyung hurried up the steps, his kids running out to hug him.
“Yah, what’s this for?” he asked them.
“Because we love you, Umma, and we wanted to with you and Appa luck,” Jinkyong said. She and Yongsook hugged Junhyung tighter. “Good luck, Umma!”
“Thanks.” He kneeled down and hugged them closer. “Appa and I love you two so much.”
Doojoon exited the house with Hankyung and Heechul right behind him. He walked over to Junhyung and pulled the younger up by his collar. The look of confusion on his face only made Doojoon smirk before he mashed their lips together.
“You even think about fighting by yourself again, and you’ll have to answer to me,” he told the younger once their lips parted.
“As long as you punish me, it’s fine.”
Doojoon couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face at those same words he had spoken a year ago at the lake by the base. He kissed Junhyung again. “Let’s go, Yong.” The elder grabbed his hand and pulled him down the porch. He looked back at Sungmin and Kyuhyun now standing on the porch with their kids. “Hold down the fort, guys!”
“We will. Go and save our friends!” Sungmin shouted as they climbed into the tank and their car. They waved as they sped away toward the western exit of Lakeside.
“We’re on our way, guys. Just hang on.”
