Part Four:
“Only a week to go,” Doojoon murmured, marking off the days on the calendar. Kikwang was sitting at the kitchen table, eating a bowl of cereal very slowly. “If you eat any slower, it’ll get all soggy.”
“I’m savoring the flavor, Doojoon,” Kikwang responded. He stared at the elder. “Why do we have to die?”
“Everyone dies, Kikwang.”
“By why do we know when we’re going to die?”
“Because Seobbie is lonely and he wants us with him!” Hyunseung interrupted, poking his head into the kitchen. “At least we can prepare for it.”
Dongwoon was in the living room with Junhyung. Sobs could be heard from the youngest and he was failing miserably at trying to speak.
“Calm down already, Woonie,” Junhyung pleaded. “Please?”
“S-sorry…” he replied. He looked up at Junhyung. “We’re dying together, right? All five of us?”
“Yeah. We’re all going together. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”
“Will it hurt?”
“Hopefully not. That’s why we’re all getting totally wasted before we enter the building.” Junhyung wiped away Dongwoon’s tears. “I’ll be with you the whole time, Woonie. Right up until the end. Then I’ll meet you on the other side.”
Doojoon leaned against the counter, a frown pulling down the corners of his lips. “We’re really counting down until the day we die?”
“Yeah, we are. So stop worrying about it!” Kikwang got up from his seat and walked to where Doojoon was standing. He forced the corners of Doojoon’s lips up until he was smiling. “Much better!”
Hyunseung laughed, looking down at his watch. “Hey, I have to get to work.” He looked back at the others. “Today’s going to be my last day of work. I’m walking out halfway through and not going back.”
“I quit yesterday,” Junhyung explained. “So did Dongwoon. We want to spend the last week together.”
“Kikwang and I are quitting Wednesday.”
“The company’s going to have to find six new replacements.”
At the thought of their company having to find new people to train as well as they did, they all laughed. They had poured every ounce of their time into becoming great just for that company. Now, years later, they were counting down the days until they died and joined Yoseob.
“We’re all really pathetic, you know?” Hyunseung said seriously. His eyes teared up as he looked at his friends’ faces. “One week left.” He opened the front door and left without saying anything else.
~One Week Later~
They all met at Junhyung and Dongwoon’s house around ten in the morning. Deciding to spend the last day together, they headed to the movie theatre. From there, they went to Yoseob’s grave and left flowers.
“We’ll be there soon, Yoseob,” Hyunseung explained, brushing his fingertips across the familiar lines that formed the blond’s name. Tears seeped down his cheeks. “Tonight. We’ll be joining you tonight, so just wait for us.”
“Let’s go fill up the trunk with the alcohol,” Junhyung suggested. His chest felt tight knowing that this was his last day to live. He was saddened by the thought of never seeing anyone again. Sure, they promised to die together, but what happened after death?
“Alright,” Dongwoon agreed. They all left Yoseob’s headstone. None of them looked back, fearing they’d see their own stones there next to his.
A few hours later, they were all sitting on a bridge that overlooked a small river running through their favorite spot. Hyunseung started crying as memories of him and Yoseob came flooding back.
“This is where I proposed to him,” he recalled, wiping at his face. He sniffled. “He squealed and jumped up and down before he cried and said yes.”
“Then it was right to come here,” Kikwang replied. “Doojoon proposed to me here, too.”
“If I remember correctly,” Junhyung started, “this is where we all met. Doojoon, Yoseob, and Dongwoon were friends. Kikwang, Hyunseung, and I were friends. Kikwang and Doojoon met at work and forced us out here to have a triple date with them.” Junhyung laughed. “I remember it like it was yesterday.”
“I remember coming here for Dongwoon’s birthday once,” Doojoon murmured, leaning back to watch the clouds. “We threw him a surprise party and he nearly strangled Yoseob for buying him a skirt.”
Fresh tears clouded everyone’s eyes as they reminisced about the past. Yoseob had brought so much joy into their lives, that they had all missed him terribly by the time the sun was starting to set.
“Let’s get to the building and drink all of that crap,” Junhyung said, standing up and stretching. He sighed in contentment, reaching down for Dongwoon’s hand.
Kikwang grabbed Doojoon’s hand and pulled him up. Then, Dongwoon and Doojoon pulled Hyunseung to his feet. They climbed into Junhyung’s car and started toward the placed they’d breathe their final breaths. Junhyung was gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were turning white.
“Relax, Junnie,” Hyunseung soothed.
“I’m trying to, but I can’t,” he replied. He looked into the rearview mirror, seeing the old him staring back at him. He had gone back to the crazy styled hair that he had in the picture. They were all dressed like that night one month ago. It seemed like forever ago to them now.
“Nothing else matters now,” Dongwoon blurted. “Not for us.”
“Our time is ticking to a stop,” Doojoon said somberly. “We won’t be here tomorrow.”
“Today is our last day,” Kikwang barley managed to say around the lump in his throat. “I can’t believe that it’s almost time…”
Once they parked by the dark green mustang, Junhyung grabbed a bottle of alcohol. The others followed suit. They drank every last drop, then tested it to see if they felt pain. Doojoon punched Junhyung across the face and all he did was laugh about it.
“No pain,” he said, the words blending together. He laughed again at how ridiculous he sounded.
At twenty after nine, they entered the building. They hadn’t expected more than one guy being there. As one man fired a handgun, another grabbed Dongwoon, placing a knife at his throat. He slashed through Dongwoon’s neck as a bullet collided with Doojoon’s chest, hitting his heart. Two more guys fired guns, hitting Junhyung and Kikwang. They fell to the ground, motionless. They were dead beside Dongwoon and Doojoon. Only Hyunseung remained.
“You killed Yoseob,” he accused, pointing to the last guy.
“Who?” he asked, not remembering.
“Yoseob! My fiancé! My life! You killed him one month ago!”
“Really? Then go with him,” the guy replied. He fired the gun in his hands, shooting Hyunseung in the temple. At 9:23, all five of them were dead on the ground. Sirens wailed in the background. Someone had heard the gunshots and called the police.
The next day, newspapers and television broadcasts released information of five company officials being killed the night before. Some said it was the work of a disgruntled co-worker. Others spoke of gang related activities. No names were released until a day before the funerals. It was all mysteriously paid for.
Under that lonely tree in the cemetery, there laid three stones of marble. Six names were engraved into them. One name, however, wasn’t new. The other five were. Yang Yoseob was now accompanied by his five friends who all passed away on the same night, one month after him. Jang Hyunseung, Yoon Doojoon, Lee Kikwang, Yong Junhyung and Son Dongwoon were finally able to follow their friend…
“It took you long enough,” Yoseob pouted, standing beside the stone. His image was transparent, as were the five other’s with him.
“I’m sorry, Seobbie. Do you forgive me?” Hyunseung asked, smiling at the blond.
“Of course I do!”
“Good. I missed you like crazy.” He hugged the blond, wanting to cry, but couldn’t.
“Come on, guys. Let’s get going,” Junhyung interrupted them.
“Oh, hush and let them hug. They’ve been apart for a month and it killed them,” Doojoon scolded him. He laughed. “No pun intended!”
Hyunseung and Yoseob rolled their eyes. They linked arms with all of their friends and headed to wherever people went when they left the world between.
