I'VE BEEN MEANING TO DO A GENERAL ESSAY ON NAOI because it's really complicated and kind of convoluted but let me try to get a summarized version down here! And mind, while a lot of this is stuff we see in the anime, a lot of this is headcanon, so be aware b ( ... )

The next eight years of his life was basically Ayato trying to be Kento, not just in personality, but in success. His father took him straight from the hospital to strict pottery rehabilitation, to make sure that Ayato caught up to Kento. But -- talent is talent! The gap between their talent was huge, and it seemed impossible to close. But still, Ayato still persevered really hard because he was terrified of losing this chance and going back to that dark room where no one cared about him. It was around this point that Ayato started taking his victories where he could -- he was never enough in his father's eyes, even now that his father seemed to be looking at him, but that was okay. His father would never scold Kento like he scolded Ayato! He would have never acknowledged him enough to care enough to scold him. And, eventually, Ayato thought that he would maybe surpass Kento -- something he could do because Kento was no longer alive to keep his record safe, so to speak. So the situation was fine with Ayato; he would continue training ( ... )

Now, Ayato had been cursing God for a long time - but not as much until his father died, and even then he only really started getting jaded and angry when he started going to school. It only worsened when he fell ill from the same disease as his father when he was around fourteen. He spent the next year in bed, dying and wondering why. Why did God do this to him? Why did this happen? Even though he tried harder than everyone else, why couldn’t he achieve anything? Why couldn’t he be himself? Even though he didn’t ask for much, why didn’t he get anything? But he eventually came to think that … if there were a God, he wouldn’t be so cruel, right? So, you know, maybe there is no God? But no matter what he thought, he didn’t think it would change anything. And it didn’t; not while he was alive. He died as Naoi Kento just a little after turning fifteen ( ... )

And then he saw Kanade! Kanade was the student council president and seemed to be fully aware of the world’s workings. She would help new arrivals settle in and move on. If someone caused trouble, he had seemingly supernatural powers (such as making a knife appear from her wrist) and could force them to stop. Essentially, she maintained order in the world - not like God, maybe, but like an overseeing angel. It was at this point that Naoi reached a conclusion that other recently-deceased students would come to: the principal and staff were just NPCs; they had no power. The one who maintained the balance in the world, the one who kept it running smoothly was the student council vice president. The students and staff would listen to her, she had power, and she was the authority on everything. She was basically in the position of God; she simply wasn’t using it as such ( ... )

It was also at this point that he started abusing his position as vice president and hypnotism more frequently: more often than not, he had a posse of hypnotized students following him around, ready to do his dirty work, and he would often beat up and otherwise maliciously harm students (physically and emotionally, NPC or real), just because he could. This period after becoming vice president and before taking the position of current acting president is where his current personality kind of developed. He became more malicious, more proud, and more abusive. Who was going to stop him? Who could stop him when they didn’t even know him? Even now, he was still a sort of made-up existence - he never existed before, and now all of himself was based on the theory that he could become God. But it didn’t matter! Nothing mattered. Thinking about it wouldn’t change it, trying to become acknowledged for who he was now and who had been wouldn’t change it, trying to do things differently wouldn’t change it, being himself wouldn’t change it, being ( ... )

It’s very apparent at this point that Naoi doesn’t think the world is a good place! It’s harsh and it’s difficult and it’s painful. Some people might live good lives, but are you them? No. Therefore, your world is bleak and painful, and there’s no escape from it. There isn’t hope, especially not for people like him. Ironically, he states that the SSS, the rebels, were the people who clung to their past the most by trying to fight a God that neither existed nor cared about them, when really every single thing he had done until that point (and continues to do) is dictated by his past and his feelings because of it. Because he was never acknowledged, he told himself he didn’t need it. He was better than that! So what! Because he was talentless, he saw talent as useless. It only matters what you can do, not how well you can do it! So what, I’m God! I don’t need any of that! Because he was never acknowledged and accepted for who he was, he decided that he would never be, and therefore everything else was hopeless and all that was left was ( ... )

But the thing is! Naoi is already dead. Which… has a lot to do with why his outward attitude and a lot of his habits haven’t changed. Now instead of thinking he has no hope because no hope is possible ever, he just understands that he has no hope as he is now. He’s dead! His life is over. His chance to redeem Naoi Ayato is gone, but that’s how it is. Now he realizes that when he reincarnates, there’s a chance that someone out there will acknowledge him as he will be then. That he might be loved, that things might be different. He was actually ganked from the point right after he disappeared in canon! He’s totally accepted himself and who he is and is ready to move on. But, y’know, like I said. He’s dead! No point in changing now; he’s leaving that to his next life. For now, he’s Naoi Ayato who lived as he did and achieved the position of God. He’s a little more relaxed, now, in the sense that he’s not pressured to impress himself or live up to his own standards (ie I don’t need anyone I don’t need hope I’m better than everyone look, ( ... )

I'M AWFUL AT PROMPTS so I'm totally raiding this from our conversation: IN TERMS OF EFFICIENCY AT JESUSING AND BEING A JESUS IN GENERAL, where was Sera in canon compared to where she is now, and how did she get there?
