That was what happened today. Many times. Four deaths on my count, three for all but one other member of my party. Yeah, Nabiki only had two. But that's a good thing.
Yesterday, we (Nabi, Aniko, and Hisime) scrounged around in Promyvion-Holla and got a bunch or Fear recollections. We met and partied up with a paladin and a summoner, too... Anyway, we swapped them in for a bunch of Psychoanima, and, today, regrouped with the now-a-warrior paladin and formed an alliance and stormed Promyvion-Dem, supposedly the easiest, by someone's word or another. First level, easy. Second level, easy. Third level, as we were fighting the Memory Receptacle... A Gourger aggro'd. The victim ran back over to us and some of the group members engaged it. Soon it was attacking the mages, at which point we all dropped everything and ran to kill it. But, it was much higher than we capped-at-level-30s could take. Eventually, the entire alliance was destroyed. Fortunately, one of the white mages had a scroll of reraise with them, which they managed to use before being utterly destroyed. It took us a while, but we finally got back on our feet. We then proceeded to kill the MR and go up another level.
...That level was hell. Utter, complete hell. I mean, hell if hell were a run-down, dusty-looking place where things all seem nothing but surreal, if anything. Promyvion still creeps me out way too much.
We paused there, and made it clear to everyone that, from here on out, were you aggro'd, you ran over there and you died. Also, if a mage was aggro'd, you provoked it, ran over there and you died. Because, sorry, mages are important, and we really didn't was a repeat of the last level since no one had a scroll of reraise anymore.
Two went on ahead to try and find the gate (level four is the final level) while the rest of us recovered. Then, we moved out. The mages picked / were assigned body guards, since we'd all had near heart-attacks last time when everyone died. I assigned myself to Nabiki after Ani assigned herself to another mage. So, Ani and I set out to catch up with the leaders and, whoo! Good thing I was there, because, yes, there was aggro. So I ran a ways off and let it kill me.
Hisi the martyr.
I didn't mind, because, hey, better the thief than the white mage.
Anyway, though, I was all proud of myself already, because I always get like that whenever I do stupid things like letting myself die for the sake of someone else... But! Nabiki, the one who can find fault with about everything, praised me! ^_^ I had done the perfect self-sacrifice! ^_^ I didn't let the mage get hit, I got the mob far enough away, and I kept myself close enough that tractoring me back and raising me could be done without anyone having to move anywhere near danger. That felt really good.
So, I'm up to two deaths.
Around this point, the two who went ahead, who had since split up to find the zone point, both died. One was at the zone, essentially, and the other made it back to near the rest of us. We raised him and moved on to find the other guy and the exit. ... Someone was aggro'd. Someone voked. Someone else engaged. Do you follow me? Nabiki and I backtracked quickly and everyone else died again. So, now it'd down to me and Nabiki. A thief and a white mage. We stand no chance. But, we slowly, slowly start heading for the zone. If we can make it to the zone, Nabiki can raise the black mage, who can tractor the corpses. She can raise everyone. But nearly every mob in the area is directly between us and the zone. We stick to the side... Empty can see through invisible and sneak... We go slowly... slowly... Several times I run ahead and target a close mob so Nabiki can get through safely. Finally, we make it to the halfway point, past over half of our dead party members. And then we're stuck. There's a wall or Empties between us and the exit. Well... I don't know what to do, so irrationality sinks in. I tell Nabiki, tell the whole party, really; I'm going to Flee. As soon as I start running, head for the zone. I'm going to get every mob between us on my tail and suicide. You MUST REACH THE ZONE. (Though in less words. =P) I ask, ready? Doesn't matter. I've been aggro'd. I Flee, I run, Nabi heads out. I loop around twice. I have over 7 of the things on me, and ANY SINGLE ONE OF THEM could kill me with one blow, and if they do, Nabiki's gonna die, too. I have no idea how I evaded everything.
Nabi made it to the zone just as I died. Tick three for Hisime.
We'd made it through the Empties.
Then came the boss battle. The first party, with two rangers and a summoner and all their two-hour skills, did fine.
We were killed as it neared death. Neither warrior had Mighty Strike. Both black mages used their two hour early on. The first to use it was also the first to go down, followed quickly by Ani, and then the second black mage. Nabi, our leader, and I all held out a lot longer, somehow. I used Perfect Dodge and voked it, even managed to keep the hate for a while, but... Poor Nabi was the last one standing again. We all died. :\ But, we're going to try again. This time, I'm pretty sure we'll make it, because this time, the summoner we met the first time will be able to join us, and we'll have a ranger, too, and all of our two hours skill.
Gods, it was scary.
...Flee-Suicide was, oddly, the most terrifying thing I did in the game today. I was shaking and I still haven't figured out why.
