There finally came a time in the night when she heard something that wasn't just a the house settling. Movement outside too large to be ignored. She went to her open window, quilt wrapped around her shoulders to protect her from the chill and just... watched Jake. Waiting to see what he was doing.
And when it appeared that he was just going to lurk around outside, she finally made the walk quietly downstairs, slipping past Charlie's room, exited the house quietly.
"Hey," She said... pathetically. She didn't know what to do for him, though.

One second there was a wolf standing there and the next Jacob was straightening.
He walked toward Bella, visibly tired. He didn't say anything. He just hugged her.

Bella would probably never be able to understand the kind of burden Jake carries with him. But the least she can do is be there for him when he needs her.

"I won't ever let that happen to you." That should go without saying but, today was different. He needed to believe that he was still capable of protecting what was important to him.
Even if they knew each other briefly, Rue had been important. Jacob had admired her strength and courage. It made it too easy to get attached to a child he knew was likely doomed.
