Which one is it?

Pin-o-chet or Pin-o-shay? NPR says Pin-o-CHET, Sting (and therefore me) says Pin-o-SHAY. Either way. He's dead.

I wish I knew. One reason why I'll never become a wine afficionado (or other type of gourmet foodie) is because of all the fancy French pronunciations. :-)

It suddenly occured to me, after re-reading the post and comments that this is a person you're talking about, not a wine. Whoops! So, who is Pinochet, and what is your interest in him?

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (November 25, 1915 - December 10, 2006) was a general and Dictator of Chile. He led the military junta to power in 1973 through a coup d'état, deposing the democratically elected President Salvador Allende. He was the autodeclared president of the Republic from 1974 to 1990 (from 1981 under a new 1980 Constitution).

He was the dictator featured in the Sting song "They Dance Alone" about the women who mourned his political opponents who "disappeared" mysteriously. He'd been accused of war crimes since the 1980's, but wasn't tried until he was WAY too old to feel the consequences. He died this week of a heart attack. Millions were surprised to find out that he actually had one.

I think if NPR and Sting differ in opinion, you go to Bono for the tie-breaker.

Seriously, tho, I always wondered why a Chilean's name would be pronounced Frenchily. The rest of his names are Spanish, so it probably should be Pee-noh-CHAYT. Probably some CNN guy thought the name looked French, pronounced it that way, and everyone else in the English-speaking world didn't question it. *shrug*

They're called DICKtators for a reason.

And there was also another September 11.

I'm kinda glad that guy is dead. I usually don't say or think that, but in his case, I'll make an exception.
