Will he understand Jack once he returns to the outside world if he find out about Jack and Ennis?
I think that's going to be a really important question in the story, and maybe one that I haven't even fully figured out the answer to myself yet. On one hand, as you said, Lucas knows all about injustice, and I'll be going into that more over the coming chapters. At the same time, he was born 39 years ago when being gay was still taboo and his father was pretty much the OMT that we know from the canon story, so homosexuality hasn't been presented to him as a positive thing...but IPOH is going to have a happy ending, and I decided to call Jack's father "Lucas" because one of its meanings is "my angel/my messenger." He's a good man and more importantly a good father- I think that even if he struggles, he will know that he has to teach himself to accept Jack for who he is because that's what being a parent is partly ( ... )

I love how this gentle and beautiful Jack, even back when he was a child, has always inspired a sense of protectiveness and fierce loyalty from a certain kind of man.Definitely; I think Jack has a natural kind of vulnerability about him which was of course completely evident when he was a baby and is still visible to Ennis now. Jack is strong in his own ways- he deals with a lot- but yes, he needs someone to look after him and I think it's a very fair point that Ennis does, to an extent, redress the loss of Lucas. Part of what I wanted to do with IPOH was explore the idea of family aside from all the issues of love and sexuality so I'm really pleased that's an aspect which has you thinking ( ... )
