My Baptism by Fire

Baptism by Fire April 25, 2008

This evening, I decided to clean off our island near our house that is completely surrounded by water 15’ deep water 200’ on all sides.  I skipped cleaning it up last year and it had grown up head high in briers and bushes.  This spring the canadian geese that make their home there had all ready hatched off seven ( Read more... )

Very true, I tend to forget how truly blessed I really am to be in good health and have a caring family. Kudos to a fellow rancher. With these record fuel, fertilizer and feed prices, I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't be better off with pine trees :)

Thanks for the verse, I have read this not too long back and it must have been in the back of my mind when I titled this entry. I was shaken up to say the least, but really could not have gotten out of jumping because of the wind fanning the flames in my direction and the very high briars. I have known of only one fellow that has gotten bitten underwater by a moccasin out fishing in the creek, so I thought the risk was somewhat low. A very good older friend of mine is called the “Catfish Preacher” and has a video out on fishing by snagging big cats spawning in holes in the lake shore with a 10’ piece of pvc pipe and a treble hook. He has never gotten bitten despite doing this most summer weekends. God Bless

"Do one thing every day that scares you. Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, and don't let them be reckless with yours. Floss."

Seriously, I thought the idea was bad when you first described it. Were there measures to control this conflagration, or would a stray wind cause the entire forest to catch ablaze?
And I still don't understand how people would find it preferable to jump out of the World Trade Center than to burn alive. What did they think they'd find down there anyway?

Thanks for sharing that interesting story. Glad you didn't end up a crispy critter. I took a glancing back through your LJ and do enjoy all the various quotes throughout. There is a good deal of literary prose to live your life by or that makes you think a second time about the actions your considering ( ... )

Hey thanks so much. I think my teachers made me read too much Percey Shelley and Edger Allen growing up! Sometimes it helps to step back and see the whole tree before you go climbing it to spot weak limbs.

From dust to dust as they say and the rolling hills around home are all terraced like China but not as steep back when cotton was king. I use bark and pinestraw mulch but have used sheet plastic and my aunt uses kraft paper mulch...it all helps. I have yet to see row green houses used except for protecting seedlings from frost...interesting.

So far, the squash, zucchini and silver queen is about gone, while the tomatoes, field corn, peas, beans, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelons and sunflowers are booming with the rain. You can ask me any questions. Hope you have a great weekend!
