The chicken or the egg?

So.. Do we all go out and celebrate on New Year's Eve because no one has to work the next day and we can all stay out late? Or is everything closed on January 1st because everyone is too hungover to leave their couches all day?

I'm guessing it was the day off thing. Last day of vacation today had me out at Surly Girl until closing last night.
