Ben had asked Jesse to drop him off a few blocks from Mama's house, and planned to hoof it the rest of the way. He had a seabag over his shoulder and a baseball cap over his eyes. Jeans, boots and a flannel shirt; everything about him looked like how he had felt once upon a time. The perfect beach tan under the clothes betrayed the midwestern look he was trying to play off, but part of him just felt better this way.
He walked up the driveway on his own, knowing that someone in the house was probably already aware that he was approaching. But he kept going, then dropped the bag and knocked on the door. He probably could have just walked in, but it had been awhile now since Ben had visited and he didn't want to step over any boundaries that had been put up while he was gone.
Not that this wasn't standard for all birthdays, but when it's your own birthday, you appreciate it a little more. Anna had been down stairs on the couch all afternoon, soaking in the smell of chocolate and waiting for it to finish. At least, until there was a knock on the door.
She bounced up with a groan, giving a bit of a stretch before making her way to the door and pulling it open. Then she blinked in surprise. "Ben."
Diana had hinted that this weekend was Anna's birthday weekend, and that she may like some company - especially since Diana was in the midst of a case and may not be able to make it out in time. He stood in his closet, looking at his choices for what to wear while dressed in his boxers, a t-shirt and his socks.
"Big time money maker who eats multimillion deals for breakfast, and I can't even pick out something to wear on a date. I really am hopeless."
He looked down at his phone that was on a bench playing music, and just picked it up. He dialed Anna's number, thinking that maybe if he actually asked her to go out with him, they could figure out what to do and he could then just... dress to match.
Anna had the night off. She had requested the entire weekend of her birthday off -- she always did -- and she was currently in the middle of a tub of ice cream and watching an old stoner sci-fi movie.
Don't ask, there was nothing else on TV.
She feels the slight buzz of her phone against her hip, and she shoves her spoon in her mouth to lick off the ice cream before answering the phone.
And then she nearly choked on her ice cream. She pulled the phone away from her mouth so that she could swallow cleanly, before going back to the phone call.

In case she needed the last name. Not like he called her that often.
"Diana told me you may want some company this weekend."
