Insect biology is very different from humans. That caffiene is only mildly poisonous to us is merely an accident of our biology. Caffiene may be very poisonous to other mammals- dogs and cats ( not sure- i hear you should never feed your pets coffee or chocolates)
My guess is that plants produce caffiene and nicotine as pesticides. plants that produce them have less problem with insect pests.
