Self-Same Feeling
Steve’s used to the feeling, almost immune: the rush of his blood, the way it catches at his joints, pulses tight and clean against the skin as he breathes deep against the adrenaline, the thrill of the chase. He’s known it, from missions to cases, to nights between the sheets; wears it like a badge, an honor, welcomes it like a friend.
And he’d’ve never thought it before, in all the hours, the moments when he clasped cuffs around his quarry, when he lined a target in his sights; he’d’ve never guessed that that selfsame feeling would ever be unwelcome, would ever make him sick.
But this time is different: this time, there’s something heavy in Steve’s chest, swollen -- tender and worn and it rattles, shakes a sheen behind his eyes as he watches, waits next to Danny’s bed, careful of too many leads, wires -- and where Steve’s heart can’t fit, Danny’s is barely hanging on; where Steve’s lungs burn, there’s a tube choked down Danny’s throat, parting pale lips too still, too silent, and Steve’s as broken as the man stretched before him, in his way -- and all he wants is for Danny to tell him he’s a fucker with a death wish, to say ”I told you so” and bitch him out for jumping the dock in the Camaro, for crashing the front end and Danny in the process, landing him here. Like this.
Steve takes Danny’s hand, turns the palm open against his lips and squints, swallows against everything, everything; all he wants, needs to hear is a goddamned “I told you so,” and he’ll wait for-fucking-ever if he has to, ‘cause once Danny comes back around -- and Christ Almighty, he will -- Steve’s got a few things to tell him, too.
