Of Subtlety and Restraint
They’re both far beyond the point of subtlety, of restraint; they are barely even men anymore, reduced to something primal, something crazed -- outside of time, there are no rules.
Twin hearts stutter hard, throb to bursting with the shuddering pulse of the universe behind those eyes, inside that soul, and of everything that Adam’s seen, within this world and that the edges of the next, this is the only thing he’s faced that truly frightens him.
Adam sees white, the end of everything, a dream long since resigned as he peaks and falls; trembles like a child against the plane of that steady chest, those dexterous lungs above still-trembling hearts, their drumbeat maddening.
He looks up into hooded gaze leveled upon him, sees the cosmos inside pupils blacker than infinity, than death itself; for the first time, he stares into eyes that have seen more hate, have known more suffering than his own.
The sight of it settles heavy in his gut.
The god beneath him chuckles, sneers, and Adam knows, suddenly, that those hearts under his ear will one day still, one day falter and fail. Come the end, even the mighty fall.
He will forever be alone.
