The rain came at first in sprinkles, just tiny specks dotting the windshield. Gokudera cursed and turned on the wipers, and as if his words were a summons and the wipers defiance, the rain came harder, steady and calm beneath the lead sky they followed to the harbor.

In the passenger seat Yamamoto laughed, as always finding humor in all things, no matter how small or trivial.

"Should've checked the weather before we left."

"Idiot, any dumbass could look at the sky and know it was gonna rain!"

Yamamoto laughed again, only softer, and turned his head toward the passenger door window, catching his reflection in the side-view mirror. He noticed mirth no longer touched his eyes, and for a moment his entire expression smoothed into a flat mask of sadness, of disappointment, maybe even fear.

"Shit!" Gokudera cursed again as the rain came down harder, faster. He pulled into a parking space on a barrier facing the sea. Below were boats at empty docks tossed by unsettled waves, the rain coming splatters, thumping, beating the roof of the car and the now unresistant windshield. Yamamoto closed his eyes, a little smile on his face as he relaxed into the seat and let the sound of the rain caress his ear drums.

"Don't fall asleep, stupid!" Gokudera sounded worse than frustrated, and Yamamoto knew by now his companion was grasping at straws of anger only to cover for his fear, the fear they all shared.

"I'm not," Yamamoto replied evenly, not opening his eyes. "It just sounds nice."

"Tch." He heard Gokudera rifling in his pockets, the sounds of loose dynamite hitting the floorboard, more swearing, a thump and a much louder curse, Gokudera's voice shaking. Yamamoto opened his eyes, saw a cigarette clenched between Gokudera's teeth, holding the back of his head where he'd bumped it on the steering wheel, one eye closed and the other sporting the undeniable gleam of tears. It doesn't actually hurt, does it, Hayato? Yamamoto thought sadly, but he was smiling when he took the sleek black lighter from his own suit pocket and held it up to light Gokudera's cigarette. The other man gave him a brief look of surprise, then the sheen of tears cleared as he puffed from the flame and finally let himself relax (as much as was possible for him, at least) into the leather seat.

"What are we gonna do about the boss?" Gokudera said after a moment's silence, accented by the steadily pounding rain. Smoke furled between his teeth in blue fumes, fogged up the interior of the car. Yamamoto had once suggested he stop, for his health, but Gokudera had responded with the usual irritation and claims it was easier this way and in their business they were almost guaranteed to die from something a lot swifter than cancer. Yamamoto had laughed and said he was probably right.

"Tsuna's the boss. We follow his decisions." Yamamoto shrugged and folded his hands behind his head, watching rain water sluice down the slanting, reinforced glass. "I don't agree with it either, but I trust Tsuna."

Gokudera's brow was furrowed more than usual, his scowl fierce enough to appear painful. "I know! I know that! But it seems like a bad move to me, destroying the rings at a time like this. Things are getting serious and we'll need those rings—"

Yamamoto cut him off with a laugh, which just infuriated him more. "There's nothing funny about this, asshole!"

"It's not that." Yamamoto smiled at him, expression soft and knowing, an expression that was always able to put out the fire of Gokudera's anxiety. "It's funny that you're the one who's lacking trust in Tsuna right now."

"That's—!!! That's not it!!! I believe in the tenth! I'll follow him until I die!"

"Then stop worrying so much—"

"You're the one who's not worrying enough!!"

It was the same thing, it was the reassuring and reliable answer Gokudera always gave in response to Yamamoto's carefree admonitions. He never worried enough, Gokudera worried too much, but together they were perfectly balanced.

Gokudera went back to scowling out the window, and the rain still poured, fell in furious sheets, the world outside matching his every feature. Gray and stormy, tumultuous and frustrated.

"I know you believe in Tsuna," Yamamoto started, watching Gokudera's profile. "But Tsuna believes in us too, you know. He believes in our own power. Whatever might be waiting ahead of us, we have to face it on our own."

Gokudera didn't answer and his expression showed no immediate change. It was all Yamamoto had to say. He knew better than to get into an argument with Gokudera; those days had passed. And he trusted Gokudera, trusted his ability to see reason even when he was being so unreasonable, trusted his courage even when he knew inside he was frightened.

Gokudera mashed out his cigarette and leaned down to retrieve the dynamite that had fallen out of his pockets earlier. Yamamoto watched him with his gentle expression, through the haze of smoke that had passed through Gokudera's body, that had stained his lips upon exiting. Yamamoto was simple-minded in all things, but when it came to Gokudera his mind always did funny things, and it had taken him a while to get used to it. But now they were men, and he understood these things better than he had in the beginning.

Gokudera's eyes caught Yamamoto's and he looked away quickly, rearranging the dynamite around his belt when he really didn't need to, pale cheeks slightly flushed. Now they were men, and Gokudera still blushed when he looked at him like that.

"What're you looking at?" He tried to sound rough and tough, but Yamamoto could still sense the unease in his voice, the slight tremor. Yamamoto caught his wrist and drew him forward, leaning over the console to meet him half way.

"Let's just try to forget about that right now."

Gokudera stiffened, trying to pull away, but not putting up much of a fight—if any at all. "What're you—?"

"It's scary," Yamamoto admitted, his own fear and Gokudera's fear as well. "But let's just think about here and now. Just for a little while. Please?"

Gokudera stared at him, a mixture of surprise and irritation. Outside the rain wasn't falling nearly as hard. "How am I supposed to think about here and now when—"

"Look." Yamamoto turned toward the windshield, where the sun was now peeking through the thinning clouds, making a faint rainbow in the lessening rain. "This is where we first kissed, isn't it?"

Gokudera blinked, following his gaze and taking in the sight. The waves were no longer throwing boats against the docks and the sea was almost starting to look blue again in the distance. The memory of that day was still clear to them both, neither had hesitated, both bursting with eagerness, both dying to be close. Yamamoto's eyes had been gentle and serious, Gokudera's painfully vulnerable and open. He'd folded easily against Yamamoto's chest, in his embracing arms, had sought his tongue and received a taste of something purer than untainted rain. Later he'd voiced his fears about a serious relationship, and Yamamoto's answer had, as usual, irritated and soothed. I don't mind if you want to break my heart. I have you here and now.

Gokudera leaned forward and pressed his lips to Yamamoto's before Yamamoto could react, and when he did he couldn't help but laugh, receiving a painful twisting pinch in retaliation. Their tongues met, gliding lazily into each other's mouths, taking refuge in the familiar tastes of smoke and water. Breaking the kiss with a smile, Yamamoto tugged Gokudera over the console, gangly limbs flailing and suit jacket twisting, cursing until he was sprawled across Yamamoto's lap, laughing with him despite himself. Yamamoto circled his arms around him, held his slender body tightly, and nuzzled his throat with cool, damp kisses. Gokudera tipped his head back and sighed, at last completely, totally relaxed.

It wasn't Yamamoto's nature to dwell on the past or worry about the future. Here and now he had all he needed.

Lyrics
Hey, I’m with you
Let me just get you a light
And if we’d thought to listen
We might have checked if the weather was right

And I don’t mind if you want to drive all day

Hey, it’s raining
I should have brought my coat
And sometimes I could sell my soul
Just to sit and watch you smoke

And I don’t mind if you want to break my heart

‘Cos you can burn paper
You can turn a wheel
But you can’t change later
Here and now just how good we can feel

Hey, stop talking
Think I can hear the sea
And did I tell you the sound of the surf
Makes strange things happen to me

And I don’t mind if you want to crash the car

‘Cos you can turn traitor
You can turn on your heels
But you can’t change later
Here and now just how good we can feel

And hey, don’t worry
So that black cat’s some kind of curse
‘Cos if bad times are coming up ahead
Just put us in reverse

I don’t want to waste time, thinking ‘bout it here and now
Nothing else matters but what we’ve got here and now
