Author Notes: A short drabble to break me out of my writing abstinence.
Kozato Enma was never a strong person.
He didn’t do well under pressure, and was too soft for his own good. Only God knows why they would choose him to be a mafia boss. Adelheid was too pushy; too demanding, always demanding; neither Roji nor Kaoru would ever voice their opinion, Aoba was too vocal about his opinions, and no-one ever knew where Shitt-P or Julie went off to. Eventually he would crumble and give them what Adelheid wanted.
Even now; as he watched Tsuna and Gokudera stare forlornly at the one-way plexiglass of Yamamoto's hospital room, he felt his stomach do a painful lurch at the thought of them finding out that it was him. It was him, it shouldn't have mattered that Tsuna didn't come to the site at the designated time, it didn't justify Kaoru doing THIS to... He shuddered. He felt dirty. But Adelheid had said---
"--ma. Enma-kun.." Enma's eyes looked up to meet Tsuna's. "Enma-kun.. thanks for coming.." Enma managed a weak nod at Tsuna's strained smile. He just looked so tired, tired and scared. If anything, Tsuna didn’t deserve this happening to him. Tsuna who was always happy and caring and wonderful. Tsuna; whose vision trailed down, expression changing to muted rage, his eyes burning amber. Tsuna; whose thumb traced along Enma’s cheek, scrutinizing the new bandages that weren’t there before. Enma took a sharp intake of breath at the sight. "Enma, your face.." Voice low as in hyper dying will mode; Tsuna’s hand tilted the other male’s head, the bandages littered across his cheek and nose. Enma scoffed at the contact, he could get a guy that was nothing but nice put into a critical condition with the snap of this fingers yet still get the crap kicked out of him by a couple of pissy teenagers in the hallway. He hung his head, attempting to swat Tsuna’s hand away and failing miserably.
“It’s nothing. I was just being useless again..” Enma’s voice trailed off at the end, whatever confidence he had disappearing. Tsuna sighed, his intensity lost and shoulders slumped, and Enma couldn’t bare to look at him anymore. He gently took Tsuna’s hand off his cheek and stared at the ceiling, his hand left on top of the other’s. Just this. This was enough. “You know how pathetic I am.”
“Not as pathetic as me.. I couldn’t even protect my own family.” He felt Tsuna lace their fingers together. “Oh yeah… How’s Kaoru? Wasn’t he with Yamamoto? I hope he’s okay-- No one‘s targeted him right?” A hopeful look in Enma's direction.
And the leader of the Shimon family yanked his hand free, gave Tsuna a terrified glare, and ran.
