He doesn't really know how it started. Well, no, scratch that- he's mostly sure that it started when Nanako got a bit too exuberant with her story about how a boy in her class wanted to take her to Junes (and wouldn't Doujima be thrilled to hear that) and didn't watch where she was waving her pencil.

Getting a pencil stuck in your ear, as it turns out, is a great reason to be kind of wary of them.

It gets so bad that he has to switch to using pens at school. Which, well, pens aren't that much different, but they don't make his heart pound as hard or his ear ache quite as much. So he uses pens, and quickly learns to write carefully, that way he doesn't have to scribble the entire problem out.

But this habit doesn't really extend to his friends. Which is why he's so distracted, lying on his bedroom floor and warily watching Yosuke fling his hands around as if there isn't a deadly piece of weaponry tucked between his middle and ring finger.
