"Do you see that?" YamaPi looked out toward the horizon, leash in one hand and the other on the top of the dog's head.

"See what?" Koyama followed YamaPi's gaze, but saw nothing except the parting rain clouds on the horizon.

"That!" YamaPi was now furiously pointing his fingers at the clearing sky where Koyama saw absolutely nothing except gray clouds, thin rays of sunshine and patches of soft blue sky.

Koyama bent forward, resting his hands just above his knees, and squinted his already thin eyes. "YamaPi, I don't see anything," he maintained in a somewhat disappointed monotone.

"You're not looking hard enough," YamaPi sighed, frowning. He turned back to the big dog that they had been playing with; his next door neighbor's pet that he was watching over while she was off vacationing with her friends in Okinawa. "Do you see it, Brownie?"

"If I can't see it, why would the dog see it?!" Koyama then paused and added, "Wait? The dog's name is Brownie? This shaggy white and black dog here?"

YamaPi shrugged. "I didn't name the dog; he came to me that way."

"Your next door neighbor, she's not colorblind, is she?"

Again, YamaPi just shrugged. "I didn't ask; when we return her this weekend you can ask!"

"That's okay." Koyama returned to looking at the sky, catching a glimpse of faded pink off in the distance. "Is what you saw pink?"

"Part of it is." YamaPi smiled, patting Brownie on the head. "He's getting it, Brownie!"

"Please don't talk to the dog," Koyama pleaded with a pout. "It makes me feel dumber than I already am."

"You're not dumb. You just can't see colors," YamaPi assured. "Are you sure you aren't colorblind?"

Koyama rolled his eyes at YamaPi. "You know, you could stop making fun of my inability to find this thing and maybe, I don't know, help me find it?"

"I could, but that takes the fun out of it; half the fun is stumbling on it yourself," YamaPi maintained.

"No hints allowed?"

"You saw part of it before when you said you saw pink. There are more colors."

"Um, YamaPi, everything around us is in color. That's not a hint."

"But it is!" YamaPi was now squatting on the ground, his head at the same height as Brownie's as he ran his fingers through the dog's long hair. "This thing is known for its colors."

"Fine. I'll keep looking." Koyama crouched down on the other side of Brownie, and looked up into the sky once more. More of the clouds had parted allowing, for the trickle of sunlight to grow in strength and shine down on the tall buildings on the other side of the bay before them. The buildings glittered and-

"Ooh! I think I can see it now!" Koyama excited jumped up from the ground, staring off into the distance, mesmerized.

"Oh really?" YamaPi gradually stood up himself, glancing over at softly smiling Koyama. "Where?"

"There." Koyama raised his hand, pointing toward the glittering tall buildings. "There's half a rainbow."

YamaPi nodded, a pleased and satisfied smile widening across his lips. "Only half, but still so pretty."

The two stood there for a quiet moment, watching as the rainbow slowly faded away, one color after another, swallowed up by the sun. When the final hues of pink vanished from sight, Brownie let out a bark for good measure, seemingly bidding the rainbow farewell 'til another day.

"Bye!" YamaPi waved in the direction of where the rainbow had been. "See you later!"

Koyama arched an eyebrow. "How do you know you'll see that rainbow again?"

YamaPi shrugged. "I don't, but it's a habit from childhood I guess. Whenever Jin and I saw rainbows together, we'd always say goodbye too."

"YamaPi, you've only known Jin since you were thirteen."

"So? It was a prolonged childhood."

Koyama chuckled, and then reached out to tug on YamaPi's hand that was holding Brownie's leash. "Come on. Let's finish this walk and get back home."

the end.
