I don't deserve the credit. In actuality, i've never used Ubuntu (i use Libranet myself), but _goodmanbrown_ would be the one who gave me the positive impression that i hold for the distro.
Despite some nagging nostalgia for Debian, I am happy with Ubuntu. If it was binary compatible with the Etch repository, it would be the perfect distro.
Even with this flaw, I think when Dapper Drake is released, it will be as far beyond its competitors as Libranet 2.8.1 was when it was released. I say you should wipe Windows when Dapper is released. I think you'll find that once Windows isn't an option, the switch really isn't that hard.
Yeah, Ubuntu is running well ... there're a couple of wrinkles (e.g. wnck-applet going nuts and requiring SIGKILL whenever I run Mathematica), but they're readily worked around.
While I was doing my PhD, I worked predominantly in Linux. There was always some need for Windows, though, thanks to bits and pieces of control and analysis software only being available for Windows (and not happy under WinE). I think I found it more difficult moving back to Windows when I started the job here, where stuff is very, um, parathyrocentric (or maybe bitrinocentric). CygWin gives me a decent shell, but it's just not the same!
I didn't know that Mathematica is available for Linux. Neat.
I was just at my parents' house for two weeks, and had to use their Windows computers for some things. It drove me nuts. Switching back sounds like a nightmare. I will add "no one forcing me to use Windows" as one more reason to stay forever in academia.
If you continue to like Ubuntu, you should harass ferrousoxide about it. I fear my constant harangues about the moral and technical superiority of FLOSS are no longer very effective...
