I think that what makes America great isn't so much the envisioned system of government (which is neither sufficient nor implemented, afaic, but that's besides the point), but the fact that transcending that government is the concept of guaranteeing certain freedoms and principles ( ... )

Even in a pure democracy, though, the sheep would be safe by the guarantee of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

Not as long as the wolves can take that right away, or deny it altogether.

Which is why Prop 8 in California pisses me off.

Well, yes, definitely. And that's why keeping our rights in force is, imo, an important part of the equation. That's the part of Libertarianism i can kinda get into.
