I was going to put up a notice for the next meme, unfortunately, the LJ-notification problem, coupled with mod's real-life business kind of prevented that. But since we're so much later than usual, I'm just going to put the post up. I'm sorry I haven't been around to respond to you guys. We should be back on track now!

The socially awkward thing is no crutch, though - it's real! :D If anything, it's more so in real life. I'm shy and clumsy, and stutter when I'm nervous. I'll try my level best to tone it down with Nora, though; as you said, she is Starfleet.
Also, I came up with the part-Vulcan thing almost as an experiment, playing out why I would look like I do (dark hair, olive skin, sharp features) if I did live in the 'Trek-verse. I figured that 'eastern European Jewish' would have been eliminated as a facial characteristic by then, so I went with Vulcan, and it developed from there. I do have a backstory for Nora, and how she came to be, but her family members don't have journals! :D
Thanks again. :)

Right now, you're suffering from talking too much, repeating your character story over and over until it is uninteresting. The anon above gave great advice in 'show, don't tell.'
Family members don't need to have journals to work out the backstory. You shouldn't fully detail out every bit of her story, because you'll want to have it flow and work with it as you build your character relationships and get more into the role of her.
Don't make Nora you, which you say you are basically doing. That's the number #1 piece of concrit I can give to you. You are not your character. You shouldn't be trying to make a character that is yourself, because that is what part of a Mary Sue is.
I would also suggest to not make being 1/8th Vulcan, and the history that made it came to be, a focal point of your character.
Work with her. Make her something more than you. Good luck!

Yeah, I think part of the problem is I have problems separating myself from my character. She started out as me because I was a little scared to make stuff up in a fandom I didn't understand yet. Now that I do, well, hindsight is 20-20, but I'm trying my absolute best to make Nora as realistic as possible, i.e. not perfect. I'm sorry if she seems like a Mary Sue, because I'm not trying to make her so. :) She's not an important character in the RP, and I'm trying to develop her as unobtrusively as possible without hogging the spotlight.
I'm also trying not to focus too much on her ancestry (and I'm sorry if that annoyed people - I'm new to this, please forgive my mistakes). It's part of who she is, but not all of who she is. She's not OMG best Starfleet officer evvaaaar, but a lieutenant who's trained as much any other - no more, no less. She talks about her family because she misses them, having never been off-planet before ( ... )

For example, in the upcoming threads everyone's going down to the planet and stuff, that might be a place for her to Do Things--making sure they get there and the like.
Have you considered PM'ing some other players to organize a thread? There's a bunch of new people and I think Guinan's in charge of recreation now; you guys could organize an Orientation Party Post or something! If everyone who was new got together it'd be a pretty awesome thing.
Having fun is one good way to help the character "grow" in your head and get a feel for how she "says" things, so you're not stuck just transplanting your own reactions all the time. Maybe you can take a choice you've already made IRL, for instance, and then have her do the Exact Opposite, just to see what's different or if she reacts differently.
