Information Page

Since I'm posting poems inspired by these characters from this unknown novel/long short story, I figured I'd give you all an information page.

The stories are set on the world of Kaigan, the same planet where the elves in Steel Bars originally came from. In a region known as the Chloreirian Islands there are three countries: Eiri, Chloral and Ephemera. Although all three have the same level of technology, they each have slightly different cultures.

Eiri is... sort of a combination of Ireland and Japan. They dress like people from Japan did in the time from 1870-1900 and the architechture and food is pretty Japanese, but nearly everything else is Irish. They're (in the first story) in the midst of a civil war, with the nobles on one side and the military on the other.

Chloral is sort of like England/the British Isles during the same timeframe(the Victorian Era). There are some differences, but that's pretty much it. Social status is very important and pretty much influences what you can and cannot do in life, except if you're lucky enough to have magic.

Ephemera is sort of like the United States in the 1920s to 1930s. They actually have cars, but that and how they dress are about the only differences. There are also some very different laws in Ephemera than in either Chloral or Eiri.

There is magic: wizards, bards (who sing their spells) and mantics (a type I made up). Common people don't know about the magic, but the gentry and nobility do. However, only the nobility know the full extent of what the mantics, wizards and bards are capable of.

Most of the main characters are mantics. Mantics get their magic from the elements of air, water, earth, fire and aether. Each one has power over two elements that can be combined to either divine (see the future or uncover the truth) or to work "magic" affects. They can communicate over long distances, teleport and otherwise manipulate the world around them.

Cain Peterson (inspired "Gabriel") is a sciomancer. Using the elements of earth and air, he manipulates shadows and light. Elliot Moore (inspired "Dream Visions") is an oneiromancer. Using the elements of air and water, he can manipulate dreams. Ambrose and his apprentice, Jasper, are melomancers, who use aether and air (earth for Jasper) to manipulate sound.

The first story is currently titled "Walking In Darkness". It inspired the songs "Dreams of Darkness" and "A Life of Seeking", which basically summarize the story.

The song "From Far Away" relates to characters from a later story that's currently untitled. Cain ends up working for the same people that Michael (another sciomancer) and Leander do.

Other stories: "Dark Designs" is set on Ephemera and deals with Felix Ramsey (a pyromancer, one who only plays with fire). He's trying to find a dark mantic who has kidnapped his younger sister. He's joined by two men who are tracking the same guy, because he killed the wife of one of them.

"The Little Fox" is set on Eiri, shortly after "Walking In Darkness". It follows Conan Halifax, a spy sent by the nobles to find out when and where the military plans to strike next.

There is another series of stories, basically set in the present day that take place at the school where all mantics are trained. Cain, Ambrose and Elliot teach there. Conan and Felix both end up there to learn more about their magic, as do a bunch of youngsters I haven't got lyrics planned for. One student, Sebastian Montgomery, does have lyrics planned... I mean to write about song about his feelings about the loss of his parents and aunt. He had a vision about it, but didn't realize what it was, so he couldn't warn them.

The last story in the universe, set four years from now, is called "White Hunters". Conan has returned to Eiri with his new wife. They settle down to start a family, when people from his past show up and he has to help them.

I think that's everything that anyone needs to know at this juncture. If anyone has any questions, just post them or email me at webbfanz@yahoo.com with the subject heading of: A question about the Chloreirian Universe (so I don't think it's spam and delete it). Other things might get through, but... they also might not.
