“They all have one,” Chris said, his voice soft. He set an object down on the table in front of Ezra. “Every single person we’ve caught from the Underground had one of these.”

Ezra looked at the object. It was a small globe with glitter inside. He grimaced. He had one too. So, he was sure, did Winnie. He looked up at Chris. “The boss uses it to keep track of his assets,” he said.

“So he knows where each one of these balls is?” Chris said.

Devin interrupted. “You have one?” he asked.

Tensing, Ezra glanced over at Devin. He flashed the man a sunny smile, closing his eyes at the same time. “No,” he lied.

A fist slammed down on the table beside him, and he startled. He looked up at Chris with wide eyes. The expression on the agent’s face made his heart pound wildly.

Chris held his finger up in front of Ezra’s nose. “Don’t lie,” he said, his voice soft and dangerous.

“What makes you think I’m lying?” Ezra asked, blinking rapidly. For a moment, they both stared at each other. Ezra bit his lip.

“Every one of the people we’ve found from the Underground has one,” he said. Then he smirked. “You also closed your eyes.”

Ezra swallowed thickly. He looked directly into Chris’s eyes, then. “I don’t have one,” he said, his voice hardly more than a whisper. Silently, he added, “with me.” It wasn’t quite a lie, not with the silent addition. He could only hope it would be enough. There was so much he was trying to hide already.

Chris stared into his eyes a moment longer. Then he pushed away from the chair. “Here,” he said, his voice calm, “I was beginning to think you were willing to cooperate with us.” He turned away and moved towards the door. “Take him back to his cell.”

“No, wait,” Ezra squeaked. He looked over one shoulder at Devin. The man looked smug. Then Ezra's eyes widened and he bit his lip. “He… was bluffing.”

Devin nodded. “Something you need to learn, Ezra,” he said, his voice soft. “You can avoid lying in all manner of ways. We - agents, that is - all learn how to do that.”

“Now talk,” Chris said, leaning against the wall. The implications were clear. If Ezra balked again, all deals were off.
