"What are you painting?"

Ezra blinked and glanced away from his work. He hadn't expected Devin to visit him that day. "It's... called the 'Boundary Between Two Days'," he said. He gave Devin a sheepish look and added, "It was an early piece by a Cygman artist named Amethyst Deepforest."

"You're forging something?" Devin said. His brows furrowed and he looked over Ezra's shoulder. "It's kind of pretty, but I think Chris wouldn't approve."

"I suppose he would prefer that Master Crawford have me killed for insubordination, then?" Ezra countered. He smiled and shook his head. "No," he said. "I realize that I am meant to be working for the Agency now, however, if I am to - as he put it, 'keep a foot in the Underground', I must keep up appearances."

"Which means painting whatever Crawford says." He glanced over Ezra's shoulder again. "Can that even happen? The moon being right there as the sun rises, I mean."

Ezra looked at the piece and shook his head. "I expect not," he said. Then he smiled and added, "I expect it's as impossible as a member of Shynian intelligence surviving for very long pretending to be a member of the Underground."

"Let's see how long you can make this work, shall we?" Devin said. He smiled and said, "Like I said, it's pretty. Seems to me, as impossible as it is, the picture works."

Ezra chuckled and shook his head. Then he turned back to his work. "Crawford's sending someone by this evening to retrieve me copy. You may not wish to be here when that person arrives." Technically, he was sure Devin wanted to be there. He probably wanted to be there as much as Ezra would have wished he could have stayed. It was merely that they both knew that was unwise.

"I'll be around," Devin said, as he turned and slipped out of the room.
