That's some powerful stuff. I have the album that he performs that one on. It gets pretty good rotation in my car's CD player. The whole thing is depressing as hell, but Hurt takes the cake.
He died within a week or two of Warren Zevon. Zevon was long fascinated with his own death, even before he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer (from asbestos, not cigarettes!) It makes for some plum pitiful listening, but it's great music.
One of my favorite songs was from the album before he found out he was dying. There's a song on it called "My Shit's Fucked Up." You gotta listen to it.
Well I went to the doctor Said "I'm feeling kinda rough" "Lemme break it to you, son you're shit's fucked up."
I said "My shit's fucked up? Well I don't see how..." He said "the shit that used to work don't work now"
