Sitting here writing ridiculous Regency fic and it just occurred to me...

In one of the final Merlin quests Bradley revealed that Tom's full name was Thomas Thomas. Ignoring the ridiculousness of the double name, with this knowledge in mind, what is your head canon for Gwen's last name (i.e. if you were reading a fic you would expect or very much prefer this last name to be used and might get a bit irked if the author ( Read more... )

Thomas Thomas...sometimes I think, no I'm convinced, the writers like to mess around for lols. Leodegrance is prettier I like it when it's used, though for some reason I write with 'Gwen Thomas' too...

Oh, yes, they are definitely looking for the LOLs. Or they're lazy. Either one works.

Thanks so much, bb!!

Thomas Thomas? Seriously?

I voted "other". "Gwen Thomas" sounds all right, but "Guinevere Thomas" sounds completely wrong IMO. As for Leodegrance, I think it's a bit too fancy for a peasant (even though she has a fancy first name). So...I dunno.

Oh, yes, I am quite serious. Unfortunately.

Thanks for your input! Thankfully I'm writing an AU where Gwen isn't really a peasant (not nobility, but not a peasant either), so hopefully Leodegrance would work in this situation.

I don't mind much what's used. Leodegrance is definitely widely accepted (although, yeah, perhaps a bit fancy for a peasant) but I've also seen Smith which works well enough, since being a blacksmith is where the last name came from. And even at the moment, I'm writing a fic where I gave her the last name Cameliard (and Morgana is Miss Cornwall) in an attempt to make the characters last names where they were historically from, if my half-assed wiki-ing is correct. So point being, make it whatever you want.

And if you're asking because your Regency will have a lot of "Miss ___" and "Mr ___" because that's how regencies are, and you want people to easily recognize it, then Leodegrance is probably the most commonly used/known/recognizable.

Thomas Thomas. lololol. I mean, what were they even thinking? Was it just kind of for-funnsies joke with the writers, or were they for serious?

Yeah, Smith (or Smithson) came to mind as well! Though I wasn't sure how often people used that one (thus the choice of "other" =P). And yep, that's pretty much why I'm asking (those poor people -- Miss Leodegrance is a bit of a handful to say all of the time).

I have NO idea. Methinks someone was a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events?

Thanks for the input!!

Leodegrance damn it!

I refuse to accept her last name in the show is Thomas. It doesn't sound like a 4/5th century last name. hahaha

LOL, bb. 'Cause this show is clearly so true to the times. ;-D But I'm a fan of Leodegrance as well. ♥

I voted Thomas, but Leodegrance is the one that I've seen the most, so I think either would work.
