Well, I was talking with thegreenyear earlier tonight and I started talking about fate, which she says she's not sure she believes in, and I started to try and explain what I was talking about, but couldn't really do it justice, so I decided to write a post about my thoughts ( Read more... )

to me, the difference between fate and destiny has always been one's ability to change the ultimate outcome. with fate, you can't - with destiny, you can. however, google tells me that i'm totally wrong, and that there's essentially no difference between the two words by definition.

i don't believe anything in the future is completely inevitable, which is why i say i don't believe in fate. i can follow your fable, but a malleable, changing fate seems to negate the use of the word itself. (most of the definitions i found included some form of inevitability.)

you're a tease. i'm trying to decide if you're one of those who believes free will is a sham concept.

It's a sticky, sticky subject, and, frankly, I'm not sure I'm really on one side of the fence or the other. .. You might say I'm on both sides at once, and, being god, I can be 2 places at once.

I think the spirit embodied by our skin makes a choice about its purpose on the planet before birth - and there are certain things that spirit wants to or can achieve in that incarnation. We may choose the easy or hard path to those destinations once we're here and many things are fated to guide us toward those destinations. Its a messy web of fated predestination by free will.
