I am sitting in the Hamline lunchroom and there are three guys at the table next to me bitching about how hard it is to be a straight, white male on the Hamline campus. Poor kid, while applying to be an RA there were so many questions about diversity. How unfair is that? He said that if he were a black, gay, muslim his life would be set. That is a ( Read more... )

Sometimes, life is rough. (But don't ask me, I'm a queer woman. I've got it made.)

Well in the world that guy would be set as a straight white dude. But, in college if you're a non-white (preferably black or Arabic) lesbian you're golden. I'm just a slightly off-white gay man and I know for a fact it pretty much gut me into this university.

It'd be one thing if he were bitching about scholarships but it's another to complain about diversity issues while applying to be an RA. If you are going to be an RA you have to know how to deal with homophobia and racism and every other "ism". Because even though they might get a leg up with the academic elements of college GLBT people living on this campus, in particular, get a lot of crap in dorm life.

Unfortunately yes. I deliver stuff to the admissions office for my job. I've overheard them talking about it. If you're any race besides white and then a sexual minority on top of that, you're in.

I totally agree with Trevor. In the world, yeah, he'd be a douche, but in the world of college, being something besides a straight white person is a huge advantage. That was one of the things I struggled with most at UPS- how slackers who never did any of the class work or readings had these huge scholarships because they weren't white (and definitely weren't underprivileged), and I would work my ass off and get nowhere near the same amount of money from the school.

I definitely think that race determining so much in the university system is unfair. There are more important factors.

And yet, straight white (well-off) men still make up what percentage of faculties, administrations, and textbook lists? It's not all about who is in the classroom.

Less anecdotal evidence, please.

Sure Korla, if I were writing a research paper, not commenting on a friend's livejournal.

Being on livejournal doesn't excuse logic so poor it borderlines on offensive.
