Gallileo Was WrongSP found this on slashdot. I was sure it was a hoax, but looking around, I couldn't find any evidence that it is. We're already changing the liturgy in 2011 to be more faithful to the original Vulgate (that's sarcasm, btw), and given the behavior of the Church in general these days, it doesn't seem like such a stretch for them ( Read more... )

hoax, rl

I dunno, didn't read the whole site closely, but: it may be genuine (that is, these people do believe it) but merely the ravings of a fringe group with an agenda. I have no particular love for the Vatican, but I see no reason to take the views of one group as representative of the official position of the entire institution. Unless something on the website is claiming that...and if so I would investigate that claim very very carefully. In the meantime I would wait for a Papal bull. I doubt the Church wants to bring any more scrutiny down upon itself right now.

That said, these people need to get a grip.

As a litugical scholar, I'm not unhappy that the Roman church is doing away with some of the Vatican II liturgical excesses. I'm reserving judgment until the dust settles, but I think there's a solid opportunity for Rome to find a middle ground between taking the liturgy completely out of the hands of the everyday Christian on the one hand (as was the case historically) and printing what I call "missal magazines" on the other.

Well, if people want to believe in geocentrism, they'll find arguments and ways to believe in it ...
