Fascinating NYT article here about someone trying to save the Democratic party. He sees the problem as 2 fold. One, the democratic party has become a random group of pros (labor, environment, choice, lawyers, ect.) that often conflict and without any sort of philosophy to tie them together. Very true...something I tried to articulate once but wasn't able to find the words for (still looking for them, suspect they may have flown to Kansas ( ... )

The culture is supported by laws. In france its illegal to work more than 35 hours a week. In germany, 20 days of vacation are mandated by law. Its very hard to fire people do to the worker protection laws, which means its less efficient to invest in labor saving devices cause you cant replace people with machines.

I honestly dont mind the neo-cons. Its the religious right i fear. The neocons are creepy and secretive, but its the religious right that wants to ban gays and keep drugs illegal. The neo-cons actually belive in smaller government, except when it comes to the military.
