Well contrary to my expectations, people are getting to work on the 9/11 commission report. Unfortunately, I don't like the direction they're headed. A terror czar sounds like a good plan, which is why its there, but really won't do much. The problem is in the agencies themselves. I also dislike the idea of one person haveing control over every ( Read more... )

Hmm, would a national sales tax become just another way to tax the sh*t out of poor people while rich people find ways around it?

I'm with you on the this czar, that czar, the other czar thing. Too much bureaucracy, too much government. Dump the whole mess and start over.

I'd think there'd be a sliding scale on the taxes: for instance, a cent on pencils, which everybody uses, but something like 5-10% on the price of diamonds, which nobody but the ultra rich could afford anyway.

So I guess that's just another way of saying we need to do something about those duty-free shops in airports....?

its hard to avoid buying stuff. As for the sales tax, you exempt food, clothing, rent, and medical care, whichis what the poor spend the vast majority of their money on.

Hard to avoid, yup, but easy to find loopholes maybe. Purchase everything in the name of some corporation and write it off as business expense. 'Course then we just have the tax people go around asking why an insurance company in Hartford needs a $6M yacht permanently moored off Grand Cayman.

Exemptions, excellent, that sounds like a great idea then.

I'd hesitate to support the axing of the income tax until I know what it's going to be replaced by...I'd support a national sales tax on goods, but not necessarily on services--can you imagine paying taxes on a Haverford education?

See, the reason I ask about the opportunity above is, Dennis Hastert is second only to Dick Cheney when it comes to being Satan Incarnate. His motives cannot be pure because if they were, he would cease to exist.

But he's still the Speaker of the House (third in line to the throne y'know) and he's running for reelecton this year. He prolly put out the book to get his face in the press, although I'm still agreeing it's a pretty good idea.
