"President Bush is better on terrorism, national defense and homeland security. Even on Iraq, even on the worst days, they give Bush a 10- point margin over Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. On the other hand, they give Kerry a lead of double digits on job creation, education, health care, Social Security, prescription-drug prices and the environment." ( Read more... )

Historically, presidents have indeed challenged or outright commissioned Congress to do something about things they perceive as problems. The President doesn't control the budget either, but do you think Congress would've voted to put us on the Moon if Kennedy hadn't said to? Do you think we would've ever gotten our asses out of Vietnam if Nixon hadn't gotten the ball rolling?

OTOH you're exactly right about everybody liking Bush for all the things he's royally f*cked up. It's bizarre.

You gotta love the media, don't you? I guess people's take on the whole terror thing is "at least we're blowing stuff up". Now, if we could just blow the right stuff up, maybe we'd get somewhere....

On the other hand, Kerry's ideas might just make it into reality. He could have bills passed that cap drug prices and things like that (though how well they would fly is a different story). Granted, the prez has no direct control, but presidential opinions and agendas are usually complimented by Congress.

When kerry meets a republican congress, their response will be to close thier eyes, cover their ears and go "lalala I can't hear you."

What I really want to know is why NO ONE has asked kerry 2 simple questions. One, how are you going to deal with a republican congress, and two, what are you going to do when france and germany don't come rushing to your aid.

because they're such simple questions that reporters are too dumb to ask them.

And I suspect that when Bush gets reelected he'll end up with a democratic congress (a very slight majority, but there nonetheless) and they'll do the whole "lalalalal I can't hear you" shpiel.

I just hate the fact that Bush seems to think that just because he's president, the whole world should be like him--pro-life, pro-abstinence, anti-drug, and straight. If it weren't for the legislation that he managed to get passed under the "values" banner he wouldn't have been that bad of a president. Still dumb as a brick, but that's what Cheney's there for.
