Sherlock is just a wee bit in over his head here, and I suspect that his previous history with Milverton isn't helping anything. As usual, it turns out to be a damn good thing that John invited himself along on this little caper.
Question: Would disabling the security monitors keep the cameras from recording? (If you're going to deal with this further on, just ignore me, please.)
Good question. I'm not exactly a security expert, so I wouldn't really know, but -- as I saw it -- he disabled the monitors and the computers, and it's to the latter that the cameras record. So the cameras themselves are still technically operating, but the images they capture aren't actually going anywhere. This probably isn't how security systems actually work (>.>), but I needed something simple to get around it, so... *shrug* Should possibly have made that clearer in the story, sorry!
