I had a talk last night with my friend Mark...whom I play guitar with occasionally. He was telling me how he thinks I am getting screwed by my friends. It's the bassist. Carlos motherfuckin' D. He's so well-known that he doesn't even need to use his full last name.
Granted he does look like Willard and there are some who swear he's a vampire (oooh dear), but these aren't the only reasons why he is so well-known. He sets himself apart because of his badass bass lines and his stage presence (his animated moves during Interpol shows have been described as those of a "demented marionette.") Fans love him because he is the most approachable band member (despite his intimidating appearance) and because in everything he does, he is an individual. I understand what you're saying about the difficulty in making pop-punk bass lines standing out. And I hear you on the attention issue. But hey, even though I'm not a huge No Doubt fan, I sure as hell know who Tony Kanal is. Hella Good. 'Nuff said.
Things will work out, I believe they always do. And think about it this way: when people do admire you and comment on your bass work, it probably means that they really were paying attention and the compliment is genuine. I think that has more meaning to it than someone saying "oh man, I love the guitarist" or "the frontman is so cool," 'cause those opinions are too commonly based on flash and image, not musical merit ( ... )
