Cause I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home... ~
Joe sighs as he pulls into the city of Los Angeles. After 20-plus hours of driving, he still has one more to go; however, Joe doesn’t complain because he knows he’s close, close to having what he drove all those hours for. The logical thing to do would have been to fly from Denver to LA but for some reason, Joe found himself in his car with enough clothing for a few days, heading towards the city of Angels. There wasn’t a single thought of regret or guilt, only of Rob and his stupid grin.
Joe looks to his right and spots his cell on the passenger seat. He didn’t even tell Rob he was coming. There wasn’t a minute that went by that he didn’t think to, but Joe just couldn’t do it. Ever since Rob returned to LA, their phone conversations had become filled with awkward silences and one or two word answers. Neither man was upset with the other; instead the words they wanted to use to express their feelings, thoughts and concerns were caught within their emotions and therefore, would remain unvoiced.
As the sky slowly darkens, Joe stops the car in front of a secluded beach haven. He doesn’t move from his seat; the waves rolling in have caught him in a trance. He remembers the first time Rob brought him home with him; they had spent many hours of everyday watching the sun rise and set beyond the sea. The thing Joes loves the most about Rob’s place is the isolation: they are the only people around for miles. Joe’s been sitting there for a few minutes when his phone rings, breaking the spell the ocean had bestowed on him. Rob Cell.
“Hi”
“Joey” Rob’s voice is barely a whisper, yet so clear. “I can see your car. Come up.”
“Yeah, ok” Joe steps out as he ends the call. As he grabs his bag, a wave of nerves washes over him. Rob’s figure appears on the front balcony as he approaches the large beach house. His tension doubles when he is seconds away. Rob’s dressed in white shorts and a pale blue polo; the sight makes Joe smile. His once farm boy has transformed into a beautiful, tanned Californian.
He steps in front of Rob, wasting no time as drops his bag to he wrap his arms around the much bigger man. They stay in each other’s embrace for a moment before Joe pulls back, a smile still fitted upon his face. “Surprise”
Laughing, Rob bends down to place a soft kiss on Joe’s lips. “A pleasant one.” He gives Joe a sweet smile as he seizes Joe’s bag in one hand and Joe’s hand in the other, leading him up the stairs. In silence, Joe follows, taking in the familiar sights. He smiles as they approach Rob’s bedroom door, where he has been pressed against countless times. The door is being pushed open and Joe walks in, hand in hand with the man he has been craving for.
Nothing has changed. White and dark mahogany still dominate the colors of this room. It even smells the same, of vanilla with a touch of saltiness from the ocean. The sound of waves crashing on to the shore and the wind whirling about float in from the open windows. Joe closes his eyes, soaking everything in. This is where he needs to be.
Unfortunately, the moment of tranquility is interrupted when he feels his hand being squeezed. As his eyes open, bringing him back to the present, he sees Rob standing before him, grinning his idiotic grin. Joe turns to him, leaning up to pull him down, closer to him, closer to his lips. Their kiss is soft but filled with need. Rob drops the bag he was previously holding, sweeps Joe into his arms and carries him to the bed. Giggling with his face buried in Rob’s neck, Joe allows himself to relax against the solid body. He hates the height difference, hates that Rob can do this to him, but tonight, Joe is grateful. He aches both mentally and physically after driving for those long, restless hours. Rob slowly lowers him onto the bed, but Joe still has his arms around him as he leans in to place a chaste kiss on Joe’s waiting lips.
Joe is sure that there is going to be a smile broadcasted on his face all night. He closes his eyes and lets himself fall towards the mattress. All is quiet until he hears Rob’s jovial chuckle; Joes props up on his elbows, eyes drifting up and down Rob’s body.
“Hungry? I’ll put something together for you, if you like.” Rob’s voice is soothing; it’s the only sound Joe wants to hear. He nods as he pushes off the bed, making his way to the only man that means the world to him.
When he reaches him, Joe places his arms around Rob’s neck as Rob’s drift to the small of his back. His fingertips are light, but Joe’s body is tingling with familiar sensations. When their lips first meet, the kiss is slow, sweet, and tentative. But Rob’s grip firms, the kiss deepens when he licks at Joe’s bottom lip, silently asking for permission. Shyly, tongues meet, relearning the contours of each other’s mouth. Slow and sweet turns into hot and frantic. Joe’s fingers slip into Rob’s hair, trying to hold onto something but failing, as his love’s hair is too short. Their bodies are pressed so tightly together, they can feel each other’s excitement. Rob pulls away slowly, licking his lips. Joe whimpers.
“Shower, eat, then I’ll take care of you,” Rob whispers as he hugs Joe close to him. He can feel Joe’s heart drum heavily against his chest. Joe tries to protest but he is silenced with a kiss and a push towards the bathroom. “You know where the towels are kept, so hurry,” with a wink and a goofy smile plastered on his face, Rob walks out of the room before Joe even has a chance to argue. So he just shakes his head, smiling though because he’s looking forward to spending time with the big grinning defenseman.

After his shower, Joe pushes the bathroom door open and is greeted by darkness illuminated by the rows of brightly lit candles. Joe finds himself standing in the middle of it all, grinning like a maniac. Rob’s not the romantic type, not for giving roses and definitely not for lighting candles. But he isn’t completely oblivious or helpless either. He’s capable of the little things that lets Joe know how much he cares he cares, how much he loves.
Wearing only a towel around his hip, Joe scans the room for his bag as Rob walks in. Joe thinks the candles aren’t needed because Rob’s smile is radiating. He makes his way swiftly across the room, stands in front of Joe for less than a second before Rob envelopes him in a warm hug.
“Robby, you’re too much,” Joe whispers softly as he buries his head into Rob’s shoulder. His head bounces as Rob laughs underneath him.
“How? You don’t like it?” He asks with a pout, teasing, but Joe doesn’t think so.
“No! I love it. It’s just that… You… We-”
Rob saves him the embarrassment with a kiss, a light press of their lips that deepens when Joe opens up for him. That surprises him; Joe never initiates. Rob pulls back, running his thumb along Joe’s lips.
“Eat?”
Joe replies by parting his lips, sucking gently on the flesh, while quirking a brow. He’s quite amused as Rob gasps. He runs his fingertips down Rob’s back teasingly as he lifts up his shirt a little, allowing skin on skin contact. Joe brings his hands to the front, fingers ghosting over the waistband of Rob’s shorts. Rob looks down into Joe’s eyes.
“Joe?”
“Rob, please? Need you now, not later. Everything else can wait.”
And Rob agrees, because he needs Joe just as much. There have been too many doubts, too many regrets but now, he knows nothing can come between them. Yeah, they’ll be apart for most of the year but they will make it work. Games against each other, rare off days together. Whatever they can get, they’ll take it because there is no other choice. He doesn’t want to think of giving up Joe, doesn’t want to think of not being with him because it hurts too much. So he lets Joe take control, lets him undress them slowly, kissing every expanse of his slick skin. Lets him tease him, prepare him. And when Joe enters him, Rob lets out a pleasured sigh, a sound that Joe can identify as an “I love you”.

The room is completely silent as Rob looks around for the clock. 6:06 and the sun is already brightly shinning with a light breeze rolling in lazily from the open window above. He’s propped up on an elbow, look down to watch Joe sleep peacefully. Strands of dark hair have fallen on his face; Rob slowly pushes it out of the way, trailing his fingertips lightly across his features. He replaces his fingers with his lips, causing Joe to slowly stir awake.
“Robby?”
Rob smiles at that because Joe is adorable in the morning. Well he is all the time, but especially in the morning. Because he’s groggy and child-like and Rob can’t resist kissing him, so he does. Slow, sweet but heated. And Joe returns it with just as much passion. As Rob pulls back, he brushes his fingers over Joe’s cheeks again.
“Lets go catch some waves” Rob says, smiling when his fingers drift to Joe’s chest.
A simple gesture that has Joe stumbling his words, “C-Can’t we s-stay?”
Rob leans into kiss Joe, giggling against his lips. “Nope. You, me and the ocean.”
To Joe, it sounds promising.

Joe is sitting on his surfboard, letting the waves crash around him as he watches Rob float in the water, hanging on to his hand. They have been waiting peacefully for a few hours now, for decent waves, only managing to catch one each. It’s been a little disappointing for Rob because he loves sharing the sea with Joe, teaching him the life that he has become accustom to. But for Joe, he couldn’t have asked for a better morning. Spending time out here, with his Rob, seeing the joy on his face when Joe attempted to ride a wave was priceless. He doesn’t care if he doesn’t catch a single wave from now on; he just wants the smile that has been on Rob’s face the previous night and this morning to remain there forever. Joe forces himself to not think of the drive back, of the next season without Rob. Why think of that, when in miles of open water there is only him and his love. Rob leans up, applying his weight to the board, to capture Joe’s lips in a promising kiss; every other thought quickly leaves Joe’s mind. In the water, he is beautiful. And being here with Rob makes them beautiful together.
