Need Your Help, Fellow Texans!

Feb 13, 2010 16:48

As you may know, I recently returned to college after a 17-year absence.  The first class in which I enrolled (because I just couldn't WAIT to learn about this topic) was Texas Politics and Government.  Part of my grade for this course will be based upon service-learning projects: for example, I was deputized as a Volunteer Registrar and have ( Read more... )

You're right: voters can not switch parties between the primary and the runoff.

I totally wrote that question wrong. In my mind, I was thinking of voters who are unable or unwilling to vote in the primary (like the ones who didn't register by the 2-Feb deadline). If they missed that deadline, they could still register in time to vote in the runoff. And without voting in the primary, a voter could then vote in any party's runoff, since party affiliations expire at the end of each year.

This is the way I understand it, at least. But I could be wrong ... that's why I'm taking this course!

I definitely need to rephrase that question. Or maybe I should just remove it entirely. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

I've missed previous elections, as well, due to not registering in time. It really is frustrating, because you always "mean" to do it. We moved in September, so I was lucky - I just registered when I changed my driver's license.

But even though you missed the deadline for the March primaries, you can still register in time for any runoff elections in April. And you certainly don't want to miss the big election in November.

You can do it online ... fill out the answers, print the form and then just mail it in. I think it's even postage-paid! Here's the Secretary of State's web site with the form: https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/vrapp/index.asp

Thanks so much for completing my poll!

Good for you. I am an elections judge in Bexar County and am amazed at how few people volunteer to do this. In most elections we can't get poll workers AT ALL. Congrats for doing your civic duty above and beyond. And I will be carrying a Democrats for Kay Bailey H- at whatever venue they need me.

I'm amazed (and saddened) by how low voter interest is here in Texas (I'm from NY originally). The exception being the '08 elections, of course. I suppose it's just not part of the political culture. Or maybe it's the long ballot. :-)
