Dust swirled like smoke through the air before settling gently atop the twisted pile of rubble that now blocked the once passable corridor. The sound of falling masonry had faded and all was momentarily still until a low moan broke the silence. A small cascade of shattered stone and mortar rolled to the floor as a hand, streaked with blood and dirt, pushed its way out of confinement to grasp futilely at nothing for a moment before falling limp amidst the debris.
For several minutes, the only sounds to be heard were the distant roar of battle and the rhythmic drip of water from an unknown source. Then another rustle of movement came from beneath the stones. The scratchy sound of tiny claws could be heard moving purposefully through the rubble punctuated by the occasional satisfied squeak.
