Summary: Takes place 5 years ago when Sengoku and Atsushi were just wee little First Years. A cute little log of how they first met, including bad English, embarrassed moments, and a lot of blushing. Of course, in the end, books bring them together <3.
The sky above was a clear, cerulean blue with random whispy clouds, and leaves of gold, orange, and brown fell, wafting slightly only to fade away into nothingness before they reached the four, long tables below. Each table was for a specific house in the school of Hogwarts, and while it was lunchtime, many classes were still in progress, leaving the Great Hall emptier than one would think.
At the Ravenclaw table, there were probably only a handful of students eating in small groups here and there along the sides of the table, but while they were bunched up, there was a lone boy who seemed to be keeping to himself. He looked shyly from left to right, unsure of what to do-- was he supposed to just reach out and take whatever he wanted? Were there rules on how to conduct oneself here? He wasn't so sure, but he was feeling a little lonely without his twin around...
He would not gape. He wouldn't stare at all the things that were so unusual around him. And he certainly wouldn't admit to the fact that he was glad that he had already made a friend after only a short time at Hogwarts. But just because Sengoku didn't admit something out-loud didn't mean that he didn't think on the subject matter. However, hanging around the other students, as much as he enjoyed their company, didn't give him much time to think and get his thoughts sorted out any. Back home whenever he wanted time to himself, he could just hide behind a book and that was the unspoken signal that Sengoku wanted to be alone. Well, when he pulled out a book and didn't turn the pages after 5 minutes. Sure, there were places Sengoku could go to be by himself, but as a first year and just learning his way around Hogwarts, the chances to go to those places hadn't been presented very often. When lunch time rolled around and his new friend Saeki had said he would be getting something later and that Sengoku could go on ahead if he wanted, the redhead agreed, ecstatic that he could finally get some time to himself.
Reaching the dinning hall where lunch was being served, Sengoku quickly scanned the crowd to see who was already there. Some people he briefly knew and some housemates as well, but no one Sengoku really felt like sitting by at the moment. Raising a slim eyebrow at the sight of one of his housemates sitting by-themselves, he remembered seeing that one being sorted along with a twin, even if he couldn't remember the name, Sengoku felt the urge to go and sit by the loner, who didn't appear all that comfortable at such a large table. Mentally shrugging, the redhead saw no reason not to and proceeded to do just that. Walk straight over and casually take a seat next to the other boy. With a small smile quickly toss their way, Sengoku reached for one of the sandwiches, among other foods, in front of him and began eating, reaching for a drink afterwards.
The longhaired boy visibly jumped when he felt the other boy pass by, only to take a seat right next to him. He blinked, wide-eyed at the orange-haired one but when he realized what he was doing, he immediately turned away and stared at the plate of sandwiches that were just ahead of him. Well... if that other guy just took them... why shouldn't he be able to? Hesitantly, he reached out and plucked a sandwich out, placing it neatly on his plate.
"...."
Somehow... he felt embarrassed eating (or sitting) next to this stranger.
Half-way finished with his first sandwich, meaning that his appetite had been curbed, both for food and for thought; Sengoku had a habit of eating slowly when he was thinking about something, the carrot-top took a swallow of his drink and eyed the smaller long haired boy sitting besides him, or who he was sitting besides, since he was the one who had sat down last. Very cute and a touch on the exotic side, what with his Asian looks and all. Sengoku knew he had some Asian blood in him, thus the name and the slight slant to his eyes, but those genes had been mostly dominated by his Irish blood. Still eyeing the boy, Sengoku made a few notes. He seemed rather uncomfortable and a bit shy though, what with the way he was sitting on the bench and the way he didn't look up from his plate. Taking another sip of his drink, Sengoku shifted and turned his head and smiled at the other boy. " 'ey," he said gently, in way of greeting. Maybe he could help the other boy get over a bit of his shyness.
...Oh crap. Was he just... speaking to him?? The boy tried not to jump into the next seat in reaction to the sudden greeting, and it nearly took all his willpower to overcome that bit of shyness he had to look up towards his housemate. Slanted eyes blinked at the boy next to him, but he couldn't help but stare, just a little bit, at the fiery orange hair and finally, those jade green eyes.
Atsushi had never seen green eyes for real before... maybe in magazines and on TV, but never face-to-face.
Oh right, he was speaking to him, wasn't he? Atsushi immediately straightened now that he was staring in the other boy's direction, and he tried to avoid eye contact after that. "K-K--" No... how did they say it in English....? Oh yeah. "H-Hello..."
Wow.... This was a case of shyness Sengoku had to admit to being surprised by. The poor boy practically jumped out of his seat at the sound of Sengoku's voice. Keeping his tone light, Sengoku continued to smile as he sipped on his drink. He knew it wouldn't run out due to the house elves busy working keeping simple things such as a glass of juice filled. Re-thinking his previous thoughts, Sengoku decided that he had to add something to his first assessment as well. Not only was the other very cute, he also behaved in such a way that Sengoku found adorable. "That first word that you were going to say," Sengoku queried gently, still smiling, hoping to calm the other down. "What was it?"
It took a very long moment for Atsushi to figure out what Sengoku was saying. His eyes had wandered down as he quickly tried to remember the whole sentence and translate it into a language he DID know very well.
"Eto... konnichiwa," he finally said, looking up again. "Konnichiwa," he nodded in emphasis, almost instinctively bowing.
Given the context clues and the time that the word had been intended to be spoken, Sengoku assumed that that was a greeting of some kind. "Konnichiwa," Sengoku echoed, doing his best to mimic the tone and sound in which the word had been spoken. He still sounded like bit an Irish mincing up words though and he had to give a sheepish grin over how horrible he knew he must have sounded. Least he knew he could say his own name with the correct pronunciation. "I'm Kiyosumi Sengoku."
Atsushi tried not to giggle at the way Sengoku had spoken the greeting-- it did sound funny coming out of a foreigner's mouth-- and instead, he merely smiled (very slightly) at the boy for having the courage to test his language out. But the smile quickly disappeared when he heard that name... it sounded very Japanese-- no doubt about it. He blinked at the orange-haired one again, his shyness slowly slipping away as he tried to catch a glimpse of anything Japanese in the boy. "Ano... is... you... Japanese?" he asked in a very thick accent, trying not to turn too red at his poor English.
Sengoku couldn't help but inwardly cheer over his success at getting the other boy to smile, even if it was a small one. It was a start and enough fuel to keep the redhead going, though that damped when the smile was wiped off his face a moment later. At the question, thickly accented and fragmented, but still there, Sengoku grinned once he realized why that must have been. "A little," Sengoku nodded, holding up his hand and leaving a little space between his thumb and index finger to visually show what he was saying. "I've been told you can tell by the way my eyes are shaped." At this, Sengoku pointed to his eyes, drawing attention to their slant and tilt that wasn't common for the Irish part of his heritage, but was for the Asian part.
Forced to look again at those bright green eyes, Atsushi couldn't help but be captivated by them. ...More people should have green eyes, he thought along the way as he noticed that yes, they were a little slanted-- so maybe he really was just a little Asian. Whatever Sengoku said next he didn't really understand, but it was definitely something about his eyes... and he was pointing at them just a moment ago.
"Sou desu ne..." he nodded at the boy, voice softer as he was mostly just saying it to himself. "Ano... Kisara--" He stopped himself before he could go any further, just remembering that it was their given name that goes first, then the surname. "Atsushi Kisarazu I am."
Finally actually learning the other boy’s name, Sengoku’s grin couldn’t help but widen a bit. It was always easier to start a relationship, good or bad, with someone if you knew what his or her name was. “It is a pleasure to meet you Atsushi,” Sengoku said with his bright grin. Leaning forward so that he could rest his chin in the palm of his upturned hand, the redhead couldn’t help but stare at the other boy. He knew that his eyes were slightly slit and had a playful, flirting look in them, yet he didn’t do anything to hide it. Sengoku couldn't explain it, but he had an interest in the other boy already and showing it in his eyes was his best way of subtlety showing it. “You don’t mind if I call you Atsushi, do you?”
As an onmyouji in Japan and being a member of a prestigious family, Atsushi had gotten used to looks of reverence, awe, gratitude, and even the stern ones from his father if he had messed up some ritual he was learning. But that look in Sengoku's eye... it wasn't that much different from the playful gaze of his brother, but it was still unique in its own way. He couldn't exactly place what was different about it, but it was enough to make him shy away just a little with a small blush. A little calmer now, he was able to translate the boy's sentence with more ease. Calling him just 'Atsushi' would have been a little too personal... if he were in Japan, but he reminded himself that he was in Britain now; things were much more different here, and the first difference was that they all called each other by their given names.
He shook his head, shyly swiping a stray black strand back behind his ear. "No... Atsushi is... ano... good? Good." He nodded in emphasis, a small smile brightening his face. "And... Sengoku... is good?" he asked tentatively, finding that calling him 'Kiyosumi' might've been a little too personal for him.
At the sight of the cute little blush, Sengoku had to resist the urge to just pounce and kiss the other boy senseless. Wouldn't that be a way to introduce himself! Though, if he did try to do something like that, the Irishman was fairly sure that any second advances from his person wouldn't be very welcome. So the carrot-top settled for just smiling and turning so his body was projected more towards Atsushi, showing the other that he had Sengoku's full attention. The redhead did note that Atsushi did seem a lot more relaxed now. The conversation was flowing with a lot more ease and the other boy wasn't sitting so stiff and straight. He still looked down on occasion, but he wasn't staring at the table now. Sengoku found himself tracing the fine lines of Atsushi's face with his eyes and wondering what that face would look like with a full smile on his face.
"You can call me Sengoku if that's the most comfortable for you," Sengoku agreed, nodding his head with a smile. "You can also call me Sen or Kiyosumi if you want to. Whichever one is most comfortable to you."
Seeing him turning to face him properly, Atsushi immediately did the same out of politeness-- it wouldn't do to have someone pay full attention to you while you're stuffing your face, right? The younger twin did a mini-bow to feel like he'd properly greeted the boy. "Sengoku," he confirmed, testing out the name for real without any honorific attached to it. He then paused, seemingly deep in thought as he tried to piece a sentence together, and once he thought he'd figured it out, he looked up again, a questioning look on his face. "Sengoku... from Ra-be-n-ku-ra?"
Sengoku was almost tempted to made a mini-bow himself, but thinking maybe he'd be making a fool of himself since he didn't know exactly what bowing meant in Asian cultures, the carrot-top refrained from doing anything and just kept his smile plastered to his face. It took him a moment to figure out what Atsushi was saying next, however, the other boy's thick accent getting in the way and messing up the sounds of a few of the syllables. Still, after a bit of thought, Sengoku felt fairly certain he had figured out what Atsushi was trying to ask now. "Ravenclaw?" he checked with a raised eyebrow. "Yes, I was sorted into Ravenclaw. Were you sorted into that house as well?"
At that, Atsushi immediately nodded, looking hopeful. He'd just found another housemate! He wasn't so sure if he was sitting at the right table when he'd gotten into the Great Hall, or if people just sat anywhere, so he wasn't sure if the people at this table were also Ravenclaws. But, seeing that Sengoku was a Ravenclaw couldn't make the boy any happier, as he finally knew someone else in his house other than his twin brother.
"Yes! Rr...Rabenclaw!" he told the other happily and maybe even a litlte proudly that he'd said the name sorta right. "Too!"
Atsushi seemed so happy about that little fact that Sengoku couldn't help the light flush that came to his cheeks as he looked at the other boy. It was quickly suppressed and Sengoku simply smiled instead. Well, now he had an answer to his earlier pondering at least. The carrot-top made it a vow to see if he could bring that type of smile to Atsushi's face more often in the future. If Sengoku thought Atsushi was cute before, he was practically edible and cuddly now. "I look forward to seeing you around the dorms often then," he said, meaning every word. "As long as you don't mind my company, I hope."
He quickly shook his head in the negative. Why would he mind his housemate's company? "Friend, ne??" he asked, unintentionally leaning forward just a bit off his seat to get a better view of those jade eyes.
I will not blush. I will not blush. Blushing is not... Awwww... fuck! Sengoku was forced to admit that he was blushing slightly due to the way Atsushi was looking at him. He couldn't help it! The other boy was just too cute and Sengoku had a soft spot for cute things. Especially cute people. "As long as you care to stand me," Sengoku managed to get out, squashing the pink taint on his cheeks and replacing it with a warm smile.
Stand him? Atsushi didn't know that the word could be used in such a way! He looked the sitting boy over once as he figured out just what Sengoku was meaning. Perhaps... it was some weird custom these Westerners had... so it'd be rude if he didn't follow them, right? Which was why Atsushi stood and hesitantly took the other boy's hand, tugging him up into a standing position. "I stand you."
Sengoku couldn't help it. The expression on Atsushi's face as he tugged the both of them into a standing position, combined with the little misunderstanding that he realized they had just gone through caused the slightly taller boy to start chuckling. Soon, his chuckles turned into light laugher that was expressed in his eyes as well on his lips. "I think you misunderstood me for a moment, Atsushi," Sengoku managed to get out, once his laugher had settled. "I meant that, as long as you didn't mind my company and could handle having me around, I'll be your friend. Not that I wanted you to help me stand up."
When the other first laughed, Atsushi couldn't help but feel mortified-- did he do something so incredibly stupid that Sengoku had to laugh at him like that? The twin immediately let go of the other boy's hand, shying away as the soft laugh continued, pale face burning red. A misunderstanding... how Atsushi wished he were back in Japan now with a language he could fully understand! He meekly nodded at the boy, refusing to say anything thing else that would sound silly-- he wanted his dictionary!
Seeing Atsushi suddenly retreat back into his shy little shell quickly sobered up Sengoku to the fact that he might have done something mean to his new friend by laughing at him like he did. The redhead inwardly cursed at himself and for not thinking before he acted. "Oh fucks... Geez, Atsushi, I'm sorry," Sengoku began, taking a step forward and rubbing the back of his head. With the other hand, he raised it as if to put a hand on Atsushi's shoulder, but something stopped him before he made contact. Instead, he covered up that little bit of movement by starting to gesture nervously with his hand as he spoke. His accent was even beginning to slip in due to his unease. "I didn't mean to act like a maggot and laugh at yer or nuthing. I just thought it was cute and fun how you translated that and I couldn't 'elp but laugh. I didn't mean any harm by it though."
A little frown tugged at the corners of Atsushi's lips as he felt like he would burn up on the spot, but somewhat understanding that maybe Sengoku wasn't making fun of him made him feel a little better. If he were a bully, he would've kept on laughing, right? And not looking so apologetic. "Oh... ah... is okay, is okay," he tried to assure his new friend. "Sorry.. English is poor."
Even with Atsushi's statement that it was okay, Sengoku still couldn't help but feel a bit bad for what he had done, even unintentionally. "I'm still sorry for laughing at ya," Sengoku said once more. "Even if I didn't mean ya any harm, I should have been more considerate." He didn't know why he was this insecure about offending someone, Atsushi's especially, but he knew that even if he knew the reason why, it wouldn't make too much difference. The redhead would just have to ride it out and hope for the best.
Now Atsushi was beginning to feel a little guilty. Maybe he shouldn't have reacted that way, even when Sengoku laughed-- the other seemed a little too nice to to be teasing him in such a way. Then again, this thought only occurred after Sengoku's second apology... well, Atsushi knew better now not to be too sensitive. "No, no, it is okay," he quickly reassured, sounding more adamant about it. "I do silly thing," he reasoned, giving the other a tiny smile to show that it really was all right.
"How about we both agree to forgive each other about this and talk about something else?" Sengoku suggested, not bothering to suppress the grin on his face now that he knew for sure that Atsushi wasn't angry with him. "Elsewise, we could be talking and trying to forgive each other for hours if we kept this pattern of conversation going." Thinking for a moment, Sengoku settled for the first thing that came to mind as something that perhaps the two of them could talk about. "Do you like books?"
Changing the subject sounded like a good idea, but Atsushi wouldn't have minded apologizing more... at least then Sengoku would really know that things were good between them. Why he felt that way, he wasn't so sure, but he reasoned it was because the boy was his first friend here at Hogwarts. In any case, the new subject seemed to delight Atsushi as his eyes lit up just a little. "Books? Hai! I like books. They are interesting... some of them. You like them?"
The grin that had just reappeared on Sengoku's face only grew brighter when Atsushi picked up on the new topic with joy as well. It appeared that he had picked the right topic to talk about between the two of them. "Like is not enough of a word, I feel. I love reading," Sengoku stated happily. "Some books may be a little dull, but I still like reading them." Thinking about books, Sengoku suddenly got an idea how he could help his new friend with his English. It was similar to how his parents helped him learn how to speak as a child. "'Ey! I've got an idea! We can use some of my books to help you with your English! I could even learn some Japanese if you're willing to help teach me a few words in your language."
Learn English through reading books? It sounded a hell of a lot more fun than reading the dictionary all day. "You teach me English. I teach you Japanese," he confirmed, his spirits much visibly lifted. He then paused, however, and glanced towards his feet, looking a little bashful. "Busy.. .now?"
Smiling and feeling much more relaxed for some odd reason, Sengoku shook his head and slung a companionable arm over Atsushi's shoulders. There was still distance between the two, but not so much that it made Sengoku's stance awkward. "I'm not busy at the moment," he confirmed with a smile. "And if you're not busy, would you like to see how our first teaching session goes?"
Eep! Well, this was certainly a change as it wasn't Ryou who was being so familiar with him, but Atsushi couldn't say he didn't like it. Hesitating for only a moment in order to blush a deeper crimson, the twin scooted a little closer to the redhead. "Yes, please!"
Blushing. Cute. Adorably so. And so much better when it was on someone else's face, preferably Atsushi's, than when it was on his own. Sengoku didn't even bother trying to tone down the smile that made it's way onto his face when he felt Atsushi move closer to him, making their positions much more comfortable. "Shall we go then?" he asked lightly, a hint of teasing in his voice, even as he lead the other boy back towards their dorms.
