Pansy had been aware of Daphne's fidgeting, listening to the rhythm of it as she flipped idly through the magazine, making mental notes about what she liked, what she didn't like, what she would have included. She'd known, of course, that it was only a matter of time before Daphne needed to talk about whatever had her vexed, so she just sat and waited.
"What's the matter, Daph?" she asked, setting her magazine aside and sitting up in her bed.
"I've...I've been engaged this entire time and my parents didn't even drop any hints or have me spend any great deal of time around him the way yours did with Draco," Daphne replied with a frown. "You think they'd have at least told me when I turned seventeen instead of keeping me in the dark about it."
She set her brush down on the night table again, and held her head in her hands.
"I've got no problem with who they chose, but I'm not in love with him either, and I'm interested in someone else."
Pansy was, for once, at a loss for words. Why would one's parents keep this essential bit of information secret? It was really pretty important and this was obviously disturbing poor Daphne. Pansy could only imagine the rage she would feel if her own parents had done such a thing.
Her brows pulled together and she patted her bed. "Come have a seat here, Daph, so we're not screaming across the room."
Daphne did as she was bid. After all, there was no reason to wake up Tracey and Millicent over this particular matter. Daphne didn't dislike them, but they weren't the ones she'd confide in when she needed to talk to about something like this, and if she woke one of them up unintentionally, she'd be doing just that unless she cast a silencing charm and made sure they weren't reading her lips.
"I don't know why my parents wouldn't tell me," she said with a sigh.
"My only consolation is that Theo Nott found out the same time I did. The thing that makes it worse is the fact that I only found out because I asked Draco to check for me. Your engagement got me wondering if my parents had arranged something for me...after all, Mother would want one, but Father might not care as long as I married a nice pureblood boy."
Well, actually, she had two consolations. The fact that her parents hadn't betrothed her to either Crabbe or Goyle was another one of those.
