It's me, I'm a tree, I'm a wombat

Most of the time, Des is pretty ridiculous. There isn't much of a filter between his brain and his mouth. He tends to have his own unique, often misinformed, viewpoint on life and everything else. He's happy to share those views with others in spite of any mocking or eye-rolling they might inspire because he secretly likes to think that he might be onto something that everyone else has missed. Being serious is something he finds very difficult, preferring to try and diffuse situations with humor rather than meaningful conversation. But if the situation really calls for it, he will try to offer actual advice or consolation.

He's someone who bumbles through his un-life rather than acting with direction and purpose. A starter not a finisher who bounces from one thing to another. He enjoys coming up with ideas and plans but unless he can rope someone else into doing the bulk of the work, chances are that they'll never come to fruition.

Definitely not the most observant of people. Subtlety tends to go right over his head. He's got enough about him to realise that something might be going on or someone might be trying to tell him something but if it's not spelled out in flashing neon letters, don't expect Des to have a clue.

Des fancies himself as an artiste. He thinks of himself as a skilled wordsmith and is sure that one day he'll be acknowledged for it. He'd like to expand his talents to other ventures but learning an instrument takes too long, painting is time consuming, he can't sing and dance definitely isn't for him.

Underneath the bravado, he knows he's an underdog - but if he barks the loudest then maybe no one else will realise he's shaggy, scruffy, skinny and kind of dumb. He likes to tell himself that he projects an image of being a cool, interesting guy with quirky charm, and that everyone around him buys into it. The fact he's usually clueless works to his advantage as the less he knows, the less anyone is going to expect him to do about anything. Which means there's virtually no chance of him making things worse. Which he's sure he's bound to do.

In his own way, he cares a lot about his Gashley crew. Some of his jokes have an underlying sincerity to them. It's how he feels most comfortable expressing himself and he only hopes that they get that. He genuinely doesn't mean to cause offense with anything he says and doesn't intend to hurt anyone. It's only with some introspection and backpedaling that he sees why he perhaps shouldn't have said or done something. He's harmless, just rather gormless.

Oh, don't mention Christmas to him. He's still kind of bitter about the whole sleigh thing.
