  • My usual strategy of deriving formulas mid-exam in the event that I forget them was very unsuccessful; apparently, the sum of a geometric series is equal to a times the reciprocal of 1 - r, not the reciprocal of r. Note that a guess-and-check method will fail for r = ½ where it doesn't make any difference, and that you should instead use r = ¼ ( Read more... )

How was ICS 178 anyway? I assume that's what the first point is about. I might just take it next year, having dropped it this year.

I thought it was a lot of fun, and Professor Smyth was really easy to talk to. And as an added bonus, it turned out to be more of a programming class than a theory class (just really simple programs, but programming-oriented nonetheless). Most of the theory behind it you get exposed to in ICS 165 and ICS 156, so as an ICS class, it's like a toned down version of those two classes combined, which was interesting. ^^ As an upper division math class, though, I found Math 131A a lot more interesting, since it covered material I'd never seen before, while I'd at least guessed at the ICS 178 material that was presented. But maybe it's just me.

*blink*

I didn't know you were going to become a programmer.

I mean, are you? *boggle*

You seem more the artistic type (though through programming you are creating things..).

Ah. I've yet to take 165 or 156. I won't be taking 156, and probably won't take 153.

At the end of my senior year, I might or might not have the AI specialization, depending on how the algorithms specialization turns out. Accordingly, I would take 178 or 165 to make sure I have it.

What type of programming? Was it all MATLAB? I found that one rather annoying to work with - was it a bulk of the work in the class?

Smyth seemed really nice. Hopefully I'll be able to take his class next year.

Evolution is a decent game if you can get through the monotonous (AND LONG) dungeons. Evolution 2 builds on the very same thing for the most part, but I think it's a bit more enjoyable (though the dungeons are just as long if not longer, I think. It's been a couple years). The story is better than the first, though, imo. But that's probably because of a mysterious cute girl as one of the main characters. I was just around the bend to the end boss and my freaking sister once again overwrites my game, pissing the fecking hell out of me (not the first time, nor the last for years to come after that). So I just gave up on it 'cause she screwed it up so badly that there was no way to beat the boss and my last saved game was hours before that.
