sweetstallion "It's disappointing for the most part."
"I thought he'd do better. I did."
"He was supposed to inherit her intelligence - isn't that how it goes?"
Theodore Bagwell sat in the living room of his Grandmother's house, staring at his knees. There was a bruise caressing his left eye which was swelled shut, an uglier brown/yellow bruise on his jawline. He'd gotten beat up at school -again- within a week of the last beating, but since he had the poorer grades of the two boys it was pinned on him so he was expelled. Again. It was his second year in high school and he was forced to live through the ridicule of boys and girls he didn't know. Caustic and cruel words were flowed his way as he scurried down the hallway trying to not break down in tears again like he had when Mulligan O'Halley had punched him in the stomach during lunch.
A hand came into his vision and he stared at it - it's finely trimmed nails, delicate bones and tanned skin. "Hey there little man...what's wrong?" Fingers caressed the bottom of his chin, bringing brown eyes up to stare into deep blue ones. The eyes that his cousin's daddy had. A sad smile curved those thin lips as he saw the bruises. "Did you get beat up again, Teddy?"
A nod. Followed by a sigh.
"You need to stick up for yourself, little Bear." Came the soothing voice of his cousin. Teddy nodded, as per usual. This was a much visited upon topic, very often his cousin Liam was there to reprimand him for being a coward using words as harsh as a feather pillow. He always softened the blow of criticism unlike his twin, Colin. Teddy gave a soft sniffle, trying to muster up the courage to speak and not break down in front of the guileless blue eyes.
"I...I know. But...it's just so hard sometimes. Las...last time I got locked into one of the lockers." He whispered the words so quietly Liam had to lean forward in order to catch them. Yelling arose in the kitchen between Teddy's uncle and grandmother.
"The boy is just retarded Melinda! I don't know what to tell you! He ain't never gonna do anything right, you know that!"
"Well you you had faith in him once and awhile he wouldn't fail so much!"
"So it's my fault the boy's an outcasted reject in school?!"
Teddy flinched, sniffling harder. Liam frowned softly - "Ignore them, little Bear. You know how my daddy gets. He's all fire, no burn. You know that." Teddy gave a small nod once more, wanting to curl up into the couch and die. Liam must have sensed this because he took those quivering hands into his own and kissed the tops of them, pulling him to his feet.
"Come on, we'll go listen to some music, yeah? No more tears or I won't letchu read my comics you hear me?" Teddy followed his cousin with the gaze of a loyal follower. His eyes were wide, still brimming with tears leaving his eyes looking like milky chocolate. He nodded again, as if it were his default mode of communication. The knob was turned, the door pushed open by a tanned hand and Teddy wanted to gasp from the beauty of his cousin's room.
Magazine articles were taped to the wall in makeshift wallpaper. Pin-up's, race cars, football players were predominant among the news paper clippings. The bed was shoved against the wall, a small table at the top of it with a simple lamp and a picture of Colin, him and Teddy squished together for the younger boy's 6th birthday party. Teddy ventured into this precious space, staring around with wide eyes. He'd never gotten to go into his Cousin's rooms before, and he knew he'd never get to go into Colin's.
Liam stood there watching his little cousin explore the space which was as large as a master bedroom in a small one level home, scratching his hand through his unkempt light brown hair. He was skinny as were all the men in his family, but kept the height of his father as a simple 5'10. His eyes were a deep ocean blue that set off his look made him seem younger than 20 years old. He dressed casually, usually in blue jeans, Chucks and a white t-shirt unless they had somewhere nice to go.
Teddy gingerly sat down on the bed, staring through a mess of long bangs at his cousin who stood there flaunting himself. He giggled softly at the older man until the other stopped posing and flopped onto his bed behind Teddy.
"So, hey, whatcha think hm? You like it in here?" He asked, tickling Teddy's lower back causing the boy to arch, gasp and wriggle away squealing a little. Teddy bit his lower lip, nodding.
"It's very nice, Liam." Liam invited him back onto the bed as he dragged his box of comic books out, so Teddy took his place by the pillows again, grabbing a book and they began to read together. They shifted position several times until Teddy was wedged up against Liam's chest who draped against him reading the same comic as he was, hearing nothing but the birds outside and the fighting in the other part of the house.
"Am I retarded, Liam...?" was the sudden hushed question. Liam blinked from his daze, looking at the younger man who'd stopped reading. Teddy was incredibly sensitive to things Liam knew this. He stroked his arm lightly, trying to soothe him.
"No, Teddy. You're very intelligent. You're not retarded, stupid or anything negative anyone ever calls you. You're a good boy with a big heart teeming with love for everyone. You are a trusting young boy, and there are people who are going to want to hurt you...don't let them. You're strong, yea? You're my cousin, so you got my blood in you. Colin's too. All you have to do is tap into that strength, little Bear." Liam told him, wrapping both arms around Teddy as he began to shake with restrained tears. The book was dropped, the boy turned into that embrace and began to cry into the warm chest in front of him.
Liam watched the destruction of his cousin that day, his fingers tangled into that soft dark hair as the boy clutched at the only person who seemed to love him, who adored him for who he was not repulsed by the knowledge of how he was created. A simple bond between these two men kept them close, kept Liam was breaking down into tears with the sobbing boy. He wanted to, wanted to weep for the loss of his brother's innocence - a childhood filled with anger, hatred and fear. He wanted to take the boy away, never return to this place again.
"You'll always be my cousin. I'll always be with you, no matter what you do I'll accept you." He'd whispered into the soft locks until the boy wore himself out crying.
So a week later when the cops had come to take Teddy away he'd asked Liam if he'd still accepted him even though he'd set Susie Miholland's house on fire and killed her dog. Liam had been too stunned to answer.
