Prompt: It had been cute, until it took a bite outta me.
A/N: I had to re-write this because it was a little TOO much the first time, and hadn't given enough backstory, so here's the re-write.
They were married in the summer, in a small little church in Alabama with his family around him and hers around her. Happiness couldn't be more pungent in the air, so when they kissed it was like two souls meeting and combining to make one. Susan Hollander could not believe she was finally with a man who truly appreciated her, who held her in the nights of her worst and always told her she was beautiful.
Teddy Bagwell was merely thankful he'd gotten a second chance at happiness, despite what unhappiness he was brought up around. The slender woman in his arms was testament that good things come to those who wait.
It was a few years later, and they had moved to Iowa on a big plot of land, and planted a few crops in a field. It was a gorgeous house, filled with the family, yet strangely empty. Susan Bagwell had always loved animals, but had never even thought about getting one for their house. She had almost gotten herself up to doing it, when there had been an attack by a Rottweiler on a girl who'd not lived that far from them. Her arm was permanently disfigured and rendered useless. Susan got scared again. She didn't want the same thing happening to Gracie or Zack, not now, not ever. So the day that Teddy came home gushing about the cutest little dog he saw at the pet shop earlier that day, she was a bit nervous.
“Teddy, you can't be serious!” Susan yelped, looking a little aghast at the man leaning against the car.
“But Susan honey, they're only 200 bucks and one of them was just the sweetest little thing, kissed my face for about ten minutes straight, and he was so SOFT. I know that Gracie and Zack would take good care of him too, come on.” he pleaded, holding her close and kissing her softly on the cheek. “Please?” He jutted his lower lip out and furrowed his brow looking as pitiful as he could. After a few minutes of begging and pleading, followed by the exaggeration of Teddy's pitiful face to the extent that he actually whimpered and his lower lip quivered, Susan sighed and gave in.
“Alright, but it's your responsibility to paper train him.” Teddy nearly jumped on top of the car. He squeezed her tight and smiled, kissing her again and hopping in the car.
“You won't regret this, Suzie-Q.” With that, he drove off to the pet store. About an hour or so later, he called on his way home. “Susan, honey, make the kids stand outside, I'm coming up the drive now.”
“Alright Teddy, you bought him food and leashes and everything right?”
“I have had a pet before, don't worry, he's got everything he needs.” The kids rushed outside and waited with baited breath for the door to open. He got out of the car and smiled. “Now, y'all both gotta close you're eyes, or else it won't be a surprise. They protested a bit, but their lids finally shut as he opened the kennel and pulled out a black fuzzball. He walked silently up to them and kneeled. “Okay, open your eyes.” They did as they were told and Gracie nearly squished the poor thing between her and Teddy, she hugged him so fast.
“You got us a puppy?!?! Oh my gosh, thank you daddy!” she gushed.
“Gracie, sweetheart, you gotta let the poor little thing breathe.” She pulled back and began to pet it within and inch of its life.
“Oh it's so cute! What should we name it?” She looked to her brother for assistance, but he was never much help, so she looked back to Teddy. “Whaddya think?”
“Well, it's a little boy, so nothing like Precious or Princess, how about....how 'bout Duke? He's got a little twinkle in his eyes, I think it'll fit 'im perfect.” He smiled, handing the bundle of fur over to her and standing up. “Hold his rump up, angel-face, it's bad for his back if ya don't.” She quickly positioned her hands so that his fuzzy little butt was held right, squeezing him and petting him. He made his way back to the car and loaded himself up with dog food, squeaky toys and a big fluffy dog bed for him.
The weeks turned into months, and Teddy had a helluva time paper training him, almost kicked the defenseless mutt for crapping in his good shoes. Everyone loved the dog, he became part of the family instantly and Teddy and the kids even taught him to be a hunting dog. One day, he'd gotten out and ran off into the woods. The kids were devastated, but Teddy went out and spent two days finding him. He walked back angrily, cradling his arm and tugging on the leash, with Sparky in tow, muzzled. Gracie was shocked.
“Daddy, what happened?”
“Angel-face, I think ol' Duke here forgot who I was, he was jumpin' up and down all cute-like, but when I got up to him, he bit me!” He handed the leash off to Susan and rolled up his shirt sleeve to wash it off with the hose. It wasn't very bloody, but Duke'd taken a bite outta him, a small chunk of his skin was gone near his wrist. He'd have to go get some stitches tomorrow, but it was too late now.
“Suzie-Q, I'll be in the bathroom cleanin' myself up, Duke stays in the garage tonight.” After that, Teddy didn't really like Duke much anymore, became more of the kids dog than the families. He had been adorable, fluffy, soft, and lovable all the way up until he ran off. He'd been cute until he took a bite outta his arm.
