Well, it follows the Gregorian calander that's been adopted my most places, but maybe that isn't the answer you want, because I can admit 'just because everyone else is doing it' never satisfied me.

Maybe because the timing is important to Polar Bear Clubs?

It just seems kind of weird that the year should start in the dead of winter. But the Polar Bear Club explanation does work.
