for Ynez

The bus smelled like a combination of over-ripe dinner, cheap perfume, and way too much sour animal odor. The ride itself was five hours too long.

He spent it staring at the other passengers. Slightly mildewy. Cute. Too wrinkly to bite. Needs a shower. Drooling.

New York couldn't arrive soon enough.

Ynez spends the time before he gets there cleaning her apartment. It's a little embarrassing the way she's let things go just a bit too long. She can't remember the last time she dusted.

As she cleans in the kitchen, she gives the ghost a stern talking-to. She isn't going to be very happy if it dumps confetti on them.

Holden does not think about any possible ghosts, oh no. Of course not. Never crossed his mind. Nope.

It's hard to remain distracted on a boring bus ride. Holden stays not-thinking about possible ghosts when he presses the doorbell.

She opens the door, then can't think of a thing to say. She hasn't seen him since St. Patrick's Day. There'd been a point when she'd convinced herself that she'd scared him off by kissing him. She still isn't entirely sure that that isn't the case.

No being scary, she tells herself.

"Hi. Come in!"

"Hi! Thanks."

She's not scary. Not at all. Sometimes she might cause a little bit of welling terror, but that's through no fault of her own.

"Wow. Your place is really neat."
