Character
Name: Kimihiro Watanuki
Series: XxXholic
Timeline: Chapter 143
Canon Resource Links: here and here.

Affiliation: Breeder!

Personality:

At the time in canon he's taken from, Watanuki is still a huge spaz, and that's probably the first thing you'd notice about him. With time, and with Yuuko's influence, he gets better, slowly but surely, but he can still enjoy a hysterical outburst now and again, though only with people who are close to him. Despite the fact that he lives alone, Watanuki is friendly and social, and usually quite polite (unless you're Doumeki). Even with Yuuko, whom he has been known to grumble at, he uses the more formal -san and maintains a respectful level of speech. He enjoys being around people, and because he isn't supposed to exist, the relationships he forms with people keep him stable and anchored in reality. He treasures his friends deeply, and since taking up employment with Yuuko, has learned the value of equivalency in relationships; so for every gift he gets, he will go to great lengths to return the favor.

He's a very neat, precise and meticulous person, despite appearances. All that flailing hides a master chef and competent domestic. While he will grumble and sigh and act like the sky is about to fall on him every time Yuuko asks him to do something, the fact remains that he will always accomplish the mission to the best of his ability. His self-esteem, previously quite low, is steadily growing as he takes on a more capable, self-assured persona towards people like Kohane-chan and Himawari. He's still awkward around pretty girls (and to some extent, still ill-tempered around handsome guys), but is learning to put his best foot forward and to take calculated risks. He develops no serious romantic interests throughout the series, being limited to Himawari, the Zashiki-Warashi and Doumeki, but it’s safe to say he would never become interested in anyone he didn't know extremely well.

Because he cannot remember his past, it's difficult to say how much of his personality is affected by it, but he does share some common traits with Syaoran, such as courage, dedication and perseverance. He has no martial or magical skills, but is extremely autonomous and capable within a household.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Mad cooking skills: Watanuki can MacGyver a decent meal out of potatoes and a bit of string. He will never starve, nor will his traveling companions.
+ Neat and organized: He's a bit of a neat freak, but he'll never lose something or forget an appointment!
+ Social butterfly: Watanuki can get along with a large variety of people, providing their attitude doesn't rub him the wrong way.
+ When Watanuki gives his word, or decides he's going to do something, it gets done.

- Watanuki is the world's biggest spaz. It can be off-putting for others when he flies off the handle seemingly at random.
- He's physically quite weak; he can’t hold his own in a fight and the incessant hiking in Johto probably won’t agree with him.

Samples

First Person Sample:
[ Atari the Porygon has hacked Watanuki's gear again, and is using it this time to film the young man as he cooks. He doesn't say a word, doesn't seem to notice that the camera is on him, as he dices carrots and occasionally leans forward to stir a mixture of something in a massive iron pot. After a few moments, he looks up and spots Atari, casting it a sour glare. ]

Atari--I told you not to play with that! [ He extends his hand impatiently, and Atari makes a small noise of regret as it drops the gear into his palm. Watanuki looks at the camera, unsure at first, before turning back to his carrots. ]

I got tired of seeing all the kibble at the store. They want variety in their food too, don't they? Otherwise it's not fair. So I'm making my own pokemon food. I'm trying some different recipes, so I don't know when it'll be finished, but would anyone like some when it is?

Third Person Sample:

You would think the first thing that would come to a person's mind in this situation would be: where is this place, and how do I get out?

Not Watanuki. No, in fact, all Watanuki could think was: the tamagoyaki in this bento is soggy.

That was the least of the bento's problems, of course; the pickles weren't the correct consistency, the rice was dry and the separators were cheaply made.

The nerve: not just a dream, but a dream with bad bento! Making an annoyed noise, he put the bento back into his pack. It was odd, he thought: this was definitely a dream, but it felt incredibly real. Biting his cheek brought a flare of pain to his mouth. Still, Watanuki knew better than to trust his own body's reactions at this point. He'd been in a dream inside a dream inside a dream...and it looked like he wasn't out yet. All he felt was annoyed and tired. There was no use giving up now, he figured, he might as well explore a bit and try to find the trigger that would take him back to the land of the waking, or to the next dream sequence.

Scouring his pockets produced two things: the first was a palm-sized device, not unlike a cellphone, and the second one was a red-and-white ball. Watanuki pocketed the device and frowned at the ball. Where had he seen this before? He couldn't remember--if he could only remember--

Tearing his mind away from the effort, he decided to think about it later and head for the center of town. He glanced about for suspicious inconsistencies: otherwordly blots, ghosts, shadows going the wrong way. Nothing of the sort came up. No, rather, he seemed to have been dumped in the quaintest, tiniest country town known to man, barely a smattering of houses to its name.

There seemed to be some commotion in the center of town. Aha, thought Watanuki, and headed for the light.

He was woefully unaware that, like most things in his life, things would only get worse from here.
