So, Doctor Who day!
I went into this not really expecting to like it much--the trailers made it look like Victory of the Daleks, which is my least favorite this season and I'm not really thrilled with Chibnall's writing.
But it wasn't bad. This episode sort of sits there looking cute, like a bunny twitching its nose. It's comfortable and familiar Doctor Who, which is nice after last week.
I am loving Rory. He keeps looking like Mickey 2.0, but he's actually quite smart and observant. He had a couple Doctorish moments this episode--noticing Amy's ring in a way that was very reminiscent of the Doctor (possibly due to how it was shot) and trying to imitate him in the grave. :) He makes me think of Doctor Who fans who take Nine's "standing up and making a decision because nobody else will" line and say "hey, I can do that, even without the Doctor showing up in my backyard." This makes me worried for his lifespan. I don't have a very good track record of characters I like living very long. Rory, please don't die!
The Doctor was such an annoyed parent/school teacher, telling off the "kids." "There will be no battle here today" sounding like "No, you can't play in the mud." He's so old, anyone else is young enough to be a child for him and he talks to them like they are. And how adorable was he with the actual kid? We better get more of that next episode, I love the Doctor with kids.
Also, love for Murray Gold. The new themes are wonderful and the use of Amy's theme when she was pulled under made that scene for me.
