Both times I went, it didn't hit until I had been there for a few days, and then I usually turned to a friend with an awed expression and said " I'm in Japan!" at which point they would either look at me like I had lost it, or knew exactly what I meant.

I think when you are surrounded by it, you will recall it, maybe?
