Turkey Day

This year was my second Thanksgiving away from home. Last year was a bit depressing, as I was pretty much on my own in Seoul with no turkey dinner in sight. That holiday turned out okay in the end -- I ended up hanging out with some folks I met at my hostel. However, my Thanksgiving dinner was a Turkey Breast and Ham from the Subway in Itaewon

make a turkey stock first :) That would be a super tasty base for any kind of gumbo.

Thanks. I boiled the bones with some onions and celery for an hour, then added the gumbo-esque ingredients.

I think I would have offended some sort of cosmic force if my first attempt at gumbo didn't follow my Louisiana mother's instructions ver batim. Especially since her directions actually included the words "that's what my momma used to say." Only after I have proven myself capable of the family version of gumbo will I be worthy of branching out to other techniques :)
