Watanuki looked down at the bundle of endless energy. He shrugged, “I don’t know what you mean.”
“You’ve been sighing and blowing smoke rings for a couple of days now. Aren’t you happy that business in the shop has been good?” Mokona asked.
Watanuki nodded taking another puff of his pipe. He blew another smoke ring before answering, “I am, don’t get me wrong I just feel I don’t know I can’t explain it.”
“You aren’t cutting prices again are you?” Mokona asked giving Watanuki a suspicious look.
Watanuki smiled, “No I’m not. You don’t have to worry about that either.”
“Then what’s wrong?” Mokona asked.
Watanuki shrugged, “I told you I don’t know. It’s something I can’t put into words.”
“Is it something to do with Doumeki?” Mokona asked.
Watanuki frowned at the mention of the name and the way his heart started to race. He shook his head, “No it has nothing to do with that idiot. Even if he has been gone for like three days. Calling me to make him dinner, I make it, and he has to go back to university to finish another project. The way I feel has nothing to do with him.” He huffed taking an angry puff of his pipe.
Mokona giggled, “I don’t think so. I think this has something to do with Doumeki. I think you miss him!”
“I don’t miss him.” Watanuki said. Of course you don’t you just think about him throughout your day and continue to set his place at the table.
Hey shut up. Watanuki retorted back. Sometimes his mind betrayed him much to his chagrin.
Mokona giggled again bouncing in his lap, “You miss him, you miss him, you miss him,” he started singing. Watanuki’s frown turned into a glare at the song his mind chose to repeat. He sighed angrily placing his pipe down on the table next to the couch. Mokona didn’t notice anything as he continued his song. Maru and Moro walked in and started to sing it with Mokona. Watanuki was close to his breaking point. It was bad enough that Mokona started now with Maru and Moro as his chorus the song became two times as worse.
Watanuki groaned picking up Mokona staring angrily in his eyes, “If I hear this song again I won’t open that aged sake until next month.”
Mokona stared back in despair, “No if you do that then it’ll be out of season! Don’t do it please!”
Watanuki gave a triumphant smirk, “Then I won’t hear anymore of that song today, right?”
Mokona nodded, “Yes, yes you won’t hear it anymore today.”
Satisfied Watanuki placed Mokona down, “Good to know now I’m going to make some snacks. Kohane-chan is visiting today and I want them to be finished by time she gets here.” He stood up working out some kinks in his shoulder. Mokona started tearing up he jumped in Maru’s arms, “Wahh Watanuki is so mean.”
“Watanuki is mean to Mokona.” Maru jokingly said.
Moro giggled patting Mokona’s head, “Watanuki is so very mean to Mokona.”
“If Mokona didn’t annoy me then I wouldn’t have to be mean.” Watanuki said pulling up the side of his yukata that slid off his shoulder. Hoping he hid the mark Doumeki made a couple of days ago. He knew he was successful when Mokona didn’t comment on it. Instead, he let out a wail burying his face in Maru’s chest, “You’re so cruel Watanuki.”
Watanuki waved it away, “Of course I am that’s why I’m feeding you.”
“Because I’m your only connection to Doumeki-kun that’s the only reason you feed me.” Mokona said.
Watanuki turned around with a mysterious smirk, “Maybe, who knows?” He turned around walking to the kitchen listening to Maru and Moro’s laughter behind him.
“Watanuki is crafty.” Maru said.
“Watanuki is creative.” Moro said.
“Watanuki is mean.” Mokona cried.
“Watanuki would like some help in the kitchen.”
Maru and Moro giggled, “Coming!” They ran to the kitchen with a sniffling Mokona in their arms. Watanuki smiled he could be mean, but he wasn’t that mean. Besides, he would wear a dress than admit that Mokona was right. It was hard enough admitting that he had feelings for the annoying student. When his attraction for Doumeki started he denied it. He thought he was going crazy or he suffered a very bad head injury. His feelings changed during his recovery from his fall from the window. After Yuuko explained the price Doumeki paid along with Himawari, he was touched. It touched him more than he thought.
From then on, he complained a bit less about making his bentos. He couldn’t keep quiet about the list of ingredients Doumeki wanted. The man was just outrageous sometimes, but he was a little quieter when he sat down to eat lunch together with Himawari. Yuuko, of course, couldn’t help pointing out his change in demeanor every time they were together at the shop. atanuki disagreed to each accusation, but he could see the knowing glint in her eyes. Every job they did together Watanuki grew closer to Doumeki. Even if Watanuki wouldn’t admit it. Only one time did Watanuki let his guard down, it was during the time Yuuko left.
While he was coming into power and becoming owner of the shop, Doumeki came by everyday. He didn’t understand why. He wasn’t as close to Yuuko like he was. After that theory Watanuki couldn’t think of another one. He voiced his confusion at dinner one day. He didn’t mean to, but his curiosity got the best of him. He thought Doumeki would have one of his sarcastic comments. He didn’t know he would walk over to his side and pull him into a hug. Watanuki couldn’t believe it. He tried pushing Doumeki back, but he didn’t let up on his gentle yet firm grip.
He could still remember the words Doumeki whispered against his neck. How could he forget? It was the longest time he ever heard the archer talk before.
“I’m here because of you. I have a reason to visit the shop everyday. I don’t care if you don’t want to hear it, but I like you. I might possibly love you. I’m here because I care about your well being. I care that you exist. Now stop being foolish and get the sake you forgot it.”
Watanuki remembered being a combination of angry and touched. He intended to get the sake, but he couldn’t move. When he looked up to glare at Doumeki, he swallowed. The idiot looked good in the moonlight. He blamed Mokona for pushing the table outside so he could clean the shop with Maru and Moro. Doumeki placed a hand on his cheek asking for the sake again. Watanuki opened his mouth to argue when Doumeki sealed his mouth over his own. Watanuki wanted to fight some more, but Doumeki kissed better than he thought. From that moment on, he didn’t have to hide his feelings anymore.
After their confession their relationship didn’t change that much. Well, if you counted kisses, touches, and what they did when Maru and Moro was sleeping different. Watanuki didn’t know he would enjoy Doumeki’s lips and hands so much. Another part of his mind told him he would, but he didn’t believe it. He has a love/hate relationship with that part of his mind. He became used to having Doumeki around even more when Himawari left for college. She gave them her blessing in her own way, but as usual Watanuki denied it and Doumeki shrugged.
After she left Watanuki and Doumeki grew closer. Not just in the bedroom, but outside as well. Watanuki would tell him about a customer in turn Doumeki would tell him about his day. Once Watanuki pried it out of him, that is. Mokona liked to joke that they were like a newlywed couple, but a threat of giving a special type of sake to Fai ensured Mokona’s silence. Watanuki could tell Doumeki was worried about him like everyone else, but tried to hide his concern through his normal mask of indifference. Watanuki tried to show his care about his concern behind his normal antics. Another sake threat quieted down Mokona.
It was finals season at Doumeki’s school. Doumeki was studying and finishing different projects for the end of the year. For him to complete all his projects they had an agreement that Doumeki would come around when he finished most of his assignments and studying. Doumeki would come over, but Watanuki couldn’t help teasing Doumeki in his own subtle way. He felt it was payback for the times Doumeki has done the same to him. Doumeki only got a good hour of studying in before he pulled Watanuki in his lap. After the third time they created the agreement.
Now Watanuki was wondering if it was a good idea. It’s been awhile since he saw Doumeki. Even if he didn’t want to admit it he did miss the archer. His advice proved to be helpful in many cases. He was able to send him to places that he wasn’t able to go. He did like sending him away to do his bidding, but he couldn’t deny the relief he felt when Doumeki came back in one piece. He liked the breathless way Doumeki kissed him. The way he took off his glasses setting them safely aside. The way his lips trailed down his neck as his hands explored his body. The way he eased inside him going deeper and deeper until he couldn’t see straight. The way he moved his hips stopped Watanuki from reminding him to bring his own drinks next time.
A tug on his yukata took him out of his thoughts. He looked down at Maru, “Yes?”
“Is Watanuki ok?” Maru asked concern deep in her eyes. Moro’s face reflected the same look. Watanuki gave them a gentle smile, “I’m fine don’t worry. I haven’t been cutting prices or not accepting the full payment. I’m ok,”
Maru smiled, “As long as Watanuki is ok.”
Moro nodded in agreement, as Watanuki chuckled cutting a piece of pineapple into a star, “Yes I am, now do me a favor and check the rice for me.”
Maru and Moro nodded, “Sure thing!” They said happily walking over to the rice steamer. Watanuki watched them before turning back to his fruit. I hope that idiot is eating something.
“Hey Watanuki…” Mokona started.
“One word and that sake is going to Fai.”
Mokona groaned in frustration, “You’re impossible!”
Watanuki chuckled placing his fruit in a bowl.
